Trails have not been open since November.  Closed for good?

Yes. Closed for good. The WWC found out that ornithologists are willing to pay 2x the parking fee and double for a yearly pass. The trails will now be used for ornithology excursions exclusively.

Must the birds to be viewed and studied have wings and be capable of flight?  If not, I will commit to flipping a bird every 500 yards to the trees and squirrels as I ride if it helps get the trails reopened to bikes.

Heard word that the upper half of Thread (connecting to Bandit) and Needle are now permanently closed as the water treatment project has expanded into those areas.

Sad times.

I hike the WWC trails often and in my opinion, they have made the right decision on when to open based on the actual trail conditions over the last few months.  It would be nice if they could open the trails that dry faster (South Trails), independent of the wetter trails, but that would also add some complexity.

They continue to clear the trail drains often (monthly) to help with the drying, but mother nature has not cooperated this winter.

Also, as they continue to lose trails on land they don't own (Tortuga), they also continue to build new trails (Field Trip, Chili Dog, Corn Dog, Spider Wart in progress, and extending Academy to connect w/ Belmeade Dr. is in progress).

I communicate with the trail coordinator often and know they are working hard to continue to improve their trail system.

Hope this update helps!

Is the WWC communicating changes to the trail system such as the loss of trail?  It seems that they may be depending on leaks and then word of mouth instead of maintaining an official channel such as a news page on their website.  I now see that the map no longer shows the loop north of Rails that had been under development forever.

Mountain bikers on trails are a minor revenue stream compared to festivals, paddling, ice skating  etc.  Only limited space on their website.

Back in the day their TC would post here....then again so would other TCs.   Grin Wink

Know whether to take the birds comment seriously. Is the land being used for something else? I know that they were doing construction adjacent to it in 2022.

Is it property of WWC or a different company that we might be trespassing on if it is used?

The initial bird watching story most certainly is sarcasm.  My follow on to this absolutely is sarcasm.  Charlotte Water is building a new or expanded treatment facility along the river that is to serve northern Mecklenburg County and parts of Gaston County.  The Gaston County waste is to be piped over the river per what I read.

Whitewater updated their trailmap to show that Tortuga, Carolina Thread, and Needle, are gone. Trailforks and MTB Project show those 3 trails closed as well.
