I copied the info below from P&R's announcement/invite for these workshops.

Correct me if I'm wrong Brian, but I think these meetings will be more about giving feedback to the community based on the information gathered at the prior workshops and possibly to reveal the new master plan as well. I don't think the primary purpose of these workshops will be asking for additional input to develop the master plan.

These will still be important meetings for us to attend both as concerned citizens and Trailblazers. We have more trail with Mecklenburg Parks and Recreation than any other landowner and we have a close working relationship with them. They recognize us as their source for trails. We want to provide them with as much support and input as we can.

Master Plan Workshop
Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department invites you to attend a community workshop to hear results of a new Comprehensive Park and Recreation Master Plan.  The meetings will be led by the PROS Consulting, LLC Team.  The purpose of the meetings is to inform the public of the input received to date from our citizens on their long range vision for the Park and Recreation Department.

MECKLENBURG'S NEW PARK AND RECREATION MASTER PLAN
CITIZENS INVITED TO HEAR WIDE-RANGING RECOMMENDATIONS

Charlotte, NC--Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department and its nationally-known consultant will present during the last week in February their recommended Master Plan for parks and recreation in Mecklenburg County. This Master Plan will cover the next ten years.

If approved by Mecklenburg County Commissioners, the Master Plan will guide decision making on development, land acquisition and management of parks, greenways, recreation centers, nature preserves, and recreation programs in the County.  The prime consultant on this project is Leon Younger, president of PROS Consulting, LLC Team. Younger was a parks and recreation director in Indianapolis and other cities.  He and his team of experts have consulted on recreation plans all over America.

This Master Plan will be presented in public sessions Countywide:

Feb. 25, 2pm: Senior Center on 2225 Tyvola Road (special presentation for seniors)
Feb. 25, 6:30pm: Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Beatties Ford Road
Feb. 26, 6:30pm:  Cornelius Town Hall, 21445 Catawba Avenue, Cornelius
Feb. 27, 6:30pm: Matthews Town Hall, 232 Matthews Station Street., Matthews
Feb. 28, 6:30pm: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, Rm 267, 600 East 4th Street

Interested citizens are invited to attend any of these presentations. The recommended Master Plan was developed after an intense assessment of Mecklenburg's recreation facilities. Citizen comments and opinions were sought in public workshops, focus groups, and through a countywide, random survey.

The Master Plan includes recommendations on many questions, such as:

What new recreation facilities does the public want, and want to pay for?
How much land acquisition is needed for future open space and recreation needs?
How much should we spend for expansion of greenways?
How important are nature preserves in Mecklenburg County?
What additional recreation programs are recommended for the future?
What programs and facilities are needed for the county's growing senior population?
What are Charlotte-Mecklenburg's needs for "sports tourism?"
How should these needs be paid for?

The master plan showed recommendation for mtb trails , greenways.

All this would not have been possible without the dilagence from some of the people in the MTB community going to ALL the meetings and making sure we were on the future plans.

I would like to say THANK YOU to ones who were out there spending thier time and money to make these meetings.

I'll be at the meeting tomorrow night (2/28) at the government center.  Hopefully at least a few mountain bikers will be present?

Couldn't make the CDOT meeting, but Mark and I were at the CMP&R meeting in Cornelius last night.  It seems like "trails" were at the top of most of the lists... this is good.

For those that can't make it, here's the presentation:

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Could someone who went to the CDOT meeting post up about how that went?  I'm curious.

On another note, I had an interesting conversation with the director of the Nature Preserves.  In his presentation, there were a couple of slides with different "hierarchies" of trails, and some mention "non-motorized vehicles".  I asked him about this and he said that bikes weren't allowed -- not sure I understand.  There is also an ad in the P&R program guide for tours of the trails on a Segway.  I asked him about how they could do this, yet not allow bikes.  He said because it was "guided" and not just open to anyone with their own Segway.  Whatever.  Just thought I'd share.

Read the (long) presentation.  It has a lot of interesting data, and I like data.

Odd how there are categories in a number of the slides for "Hiking/Biking trails" and also "Mountain Biking trails".

In the presentation tonight in Matthews they showed a spreadsheet estimating that the county needs an additional 250 miles of "hiking/biking trails" to meet the estimated population growth over the next 10 years.

Why are they so hung up on aquariums and zoos around here? They've got the biggest cat sanctuary in the Southeast right down the road and I don't see the tourists and families flocking to that?

I went to the Master Plan meeting last night in Matthews and met Greg Jackson, the main man with Park Operations and Athletic Services and the new Director, Jim Garges. I must say that these guys are some of the most approachable people I've ever met at Park and Rec. and they seem to understand what the Trailblazers have to offer to them!  Our new club president, Jim Grover, was there and he seems to be doing a great job of continuing the inroads that we have made at Park and Rec. in recent years.
The need for trails for hiking and biking was at the top of the list of desired amenities by the citizens who were interviewed for the Master Plan Survey. Mountain Bike Trails specifically were also noted about halfway down the list. I'd say that the future of trails in Meck. Co. looks pretty good. Let's keep the ball rolling..
The new Greenprint GIS Survey looked really cool. It gives ways of finding undeveloped land in the county for different uses by inputting variables like canopy cover, streambed existence, rare species presence and many others. I think Jerry will love it.  I think that the different Park District Offices will have it so we may be able to get their help in finding suitable greenspace for more trails. It is outlined starting on page 83 of this presentation:
