Trailblazers at Beatty on Sunday 5/4

Sorry folks it's a little late in being announced. Just like the Bike! Charlotte flyer said, the Tarheel Trailblazers are hosting an informal ride and cookout at Col. Francis Beatty Park on Sunday, May 4. Riding from 12-3, we'll fire up the grills around 1:00. We'll provide hot dogs, burgers and some fixins, hope to have some tea or other family friendly beverages. We'll set up down in the tennis court parking lot area. Bring a friend who might not have ridden there, or anyone that would like to get acquainted with the volunteer organization that builds and maintains the trails. If the trails are wet we can still hike 'em, and we'll still be there cooking the food so come on out!

Perhaps we should set up and treat some local walkers as well. Let them know who builds the trails and do some P.R.  Smiley

Don't forget to bring a Trailblazers banner...

...and a box of dog treats...it's Beatty after all.

You shouldn't do that either after it's rained.  Causes just as much damage as riding.  Big dog prints and runners, too.

No, didn't make the flyer, but did make the Observer insert. Deadline for the flyer was earlier and we were still deciding what the club should do (we didn't even get the OK from Parks & Rec 'til yesterday, so we might've been hiding in a back lot somewhere.

I don't know how to get the walkers over to meet us unless someone wants to make a sign. Chance of rain in the forecast on Sat so I was just keeping Sunday options open to keep folks interested. Otherwise Brain Malec and I will have to sit there and eat a couple hundred burgers and dogs (hot dogs, not real dogs), and it won't be pretty. Do walkers/animals really tear up a wet trail? I guess I've never noticed, I see dog and deer tracks and footprints now and then, but never really thought about it much. If I saw horse prints or a mountain lion or bear track, I might take notice.

I think they are now calling for Saturday to be great, but rain is expected for Sunday.  Angry

Yes, dogs and hikers can cause minor damage to wet trails. "I know somebody" with a big dog that, he says, sometimes leaves pawprints in the mud. But "my friend" points out that the pawprints are usually long gone in a day or two, after about a million tires run over them, leaving deep ruts and sometimes emergency skids. I, I mean "my friend", says he sees deer and raccoon tracks in the mud too, so he figures if THEY won't stop walking the trail when wet, well, he shouldn't feel TOO bad about doing it too.

Hope you guys had a good turnout.  Sorry I missed it.  The Divas were hosting the Family Ride out of Freedom Park at 2 pm.

Same ride, same time, same place, next Sun May 11 - with Mom.  This is a very pretty ride, ~10 miles, through Dilworth & Myers Park.  So come on out.

Whew, that was fun! Thanks everyone for coming out!  Thanks Parks & Rec for letting us use the facility. The weather dieties smiled on us, no one went hungry, and no one got an eye put out. We didn't really count, but we think about 100 total by the end. We had several folks stop by who didn't know much about the Trailblazers and with luck that'll be some new members, and a couple want to pitch in on some trailwork. A couple folks were members but had never had a chance to ride with people from the club so that was cool. Even got a couple of the ladies pointed towards the Dirt Divas. Thanks to everyone who helped put it together, let us use a grill or tent, made kind donations to the club, and on and on.

Great pictures above too. If anyone has others to post let's see 'em. I want to send a couple to the Parks & Rec folks too so they can see how popular the trails are. I think a shot with all the bikes on the ground next to the full bike rack would be good to share with them.

Thanks to all that put this together, I had a great time and the trail was as good as I have ever seen it, I had not ridden there for about a year and a half, hardly recognized the place.
Good to see all the kids out there too.
Thanks again

I didn't get to see them out on the trail, but they were wild and dangerous in the parking lot! Smiley
