Re: the location - I'm certain that the ability to serve & consume Beer has much to do with the choice. Also, as Jim mentions, the facilities - large enclosed/covered building with sinks, electricity, bathrooms, plenty of tables & chairs, outside fire ring, etc. all make for a nicer environment for food storage, prep & clean up, display of raffle prizes, hanging out, etc. (And, some would argue that the THTB, while not solely responsible, do much to assist in the maintenance of these trails.) Re: rain date - We have been extremely fortunate in my 6+ years of attending that we have had beautiful days for this event. I suspect, in the case of wet trails, we would skip the ride and the rest of the event would go on as scheduled. If you are not directly involved with the planning, it is probably difficult to appreciate all that goes on behind the scenes... the reservation (date, deposit, contract) is made well in advance. The caterer selection, menu, etc. planned months in advance. Details/head count for food finalized the week prior... Hopefully you get the idea. In the unfortunate circumstance of wet trails, we can't let all that food go to waste! Please treat it as a social event & come hang out! You'll see old friends you haven't seen in awhile, you will get to meet the officers for both clubs for the upcoming year and, if you're lucky, you'll likely win some cool bike related stuff. This is more than just a group ride, its a well planned event. We hope you appreciate & enjoy!
