crazy loose non-drive side spokes

Print Post
I had a wheel set built several months ago. After about 300mi of NOT checking my spoke tension I noticed almost all of my non-drive side spokes were loose to the point they flopping around. My bike is SS with a non-ss specific hub. The rims are light racey Velocity Blunt SL's laced to DT 350's with double butted Sapim spokes. Before I pay to have these wheels retensioned and trued is there possibly something else wrong that could've caused the failure? I put several thousand miles on my GF Duster SS set without a hitch.

Is this the result of a 1500g wheel set? Do they need tensioning often?
Result of a non SS hub on an SS?
Issue with the build? Maybe I should've tensioned them after the first few rides. Like car wheel lugs
Or do I just put down too much HP?  Cool

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

Is this the result of a 1500g wheel set? Depends on rider weight and riding style
Do they need tensioning often?  No
Result of a non SS hub on an SS? No
Issue with the build? Very likely
Maybe I should've tensioned them after the first few rides. Like car wheel lugs I recommend doing this after a new build.  I have seen some new build hubs settle in (Chris King) and need very minor retention but more often not.
Or do I just put down too much HP?  Cool

If the initial spoke tension and stress relieving is done during the building process, most times there are little to no issues afterwards.  Sounds like spoke tension was your biggest culprit.

Correct spoke tension is a wheel's best friend. Smiley

It also sounds like the builder may not have used a locking spoke prep while building.

Park TM-1 tension meter.  Easiest way to check without one is to grab the spokes and give them good wiggle.  You can also pluck them and listen to the tone differences.  Lots of info on the interwebs.  Tension meter is best but lots of folks use the sound method.
