Alternatives when you can't ride.

Man, I come back from vacation and everyone is up in arms about the trails being closed.  Well, let me suggest a few alternatives to blowing up the clubs forums and teh intewebz....

1.  Go for a road ride.  Don't even need a road bike.
2.  Spend more time with your family, wife, kids, etc.
3.  Help out with trail work at the local trails.  Helps gain new perspective and is a good work out, too!

Yea, we're working at Fisher this Sunday and I'm sure BigBikeMike could use some help at North Meck and LNSP.  worker-rider could use some help at BYT, too.

Later...

Shenandoah National Park.  Go there this time every year.  Usually ride at Masanutten or GW National Forest (George Washington) but didn't bring the bike this year.

Did get some sweet hikes in, though.  And got up close and personal with a 3 1/2 foot timber rattler!  I'll post pics of him later.

I did 20 miles of road riding in the time it would take me to do about 8 miles at Sherman.  No offense but road riding just simply never did bring up many challenges... might as well run on a treadmill... just sayin...

Or a good group ride.  Hitch on to a good A ride and try to keep up.  Pretty challenging and quite fun.  Way better than riding by yourself.

Yeah, keeping a 20 mph+ pace for 3-4 hours in hilly terrain is quite enough challenge for me.  I wouldn't say more than I ever faced on a mountain bike, but different.  and fun.

I was close to picking it up but knew the wife would probably make me sleep with it if I did. Tongue

Seriously, I did consider doing a Steve Irwin impersonation.  Smiley

You caught this with your hands or a snare, peeled off it's skin like a ladies stocking, ate the meat, and then used the skin as a bladder for your drinking water right?

Just went for a ride on wet surface streets in rush hour to stop the atrophy of muscles related to all things bicycle. Things get a little hairy but if you look out for yourself rather than worry about legalities like traffic "laws" and who technically has the right of way you can actually get a good workout. Still, not nearly as fun as riding the trails.
