My understanding of the situation out there was that they lease the property that they physically sit on from Meck County Parks, and not the area where the rest of the trails are (this doesn't include the private property sections like the Lake loop).  They were not supposed to control or maintain the trails, although they could charge to park in their parking lot.  This is the way I recall it starting in 2006. I remember one time in like 2009 I was riding with somebody that got seriously hurt, and I went to the office to get their assistance with getting her off the trail and to somewhere where and ambulance could get her.  They told me that didn't do that because the trails were not on their property.  Since then I have seen they have put emergency location signs, so I guess that has change. So do they now claim the trails as well?  Are they leasing all of that land now?  If they are going to claim the trails as their, then they need to being paying for the property they are on.

Kit, they have always leased the whole property from Mecklenburg P&R, to my understanding.  I don't think any of that has ever changed.

Tim Bettencourt no longer works there. They have so many other things going on besides trails and so many motives besides people getting to ride them. I actually got myself into some hot water when I worked there by telling the truth about why trails were open and closed and how that call was made.

They have done alot of great work. But they really really dont want anyone- including the employees, dickering with their trails unless there have been 14.3 meetings about it and a comprehensive plan drawn up.

Take it easy on em. Its not easy being the WWC.

Why does the bike rental shack have to be manned for the bike trails to be open?!  How many man hours does it take to have somebody make a decision on if the trails are dry enough to ride?  They have emergency numbers to call in case of an accident and I seriously doubt the number rings through to the phone of some Paramedic that also runs the bike rental shop.

People with a parking pass and their own equipment should be able to use the trails whenver they are rideable regardless of if it is peak season or slow. Is this not the case?

OF COURSE Joe T. is right on the money! It is all about the $! The trails have been closed to public use more days than open since 1/1/13 and not open to the public since June 27th?!?! Obviously, public use of the trail system is NOT one of their priorities, at least at this point in time. Events, concerts, and adventure races are. Stewardship of the trail system for public use is NOT WHAT THEY DO OR HOW THEY SPEND THER RESOURCES. Not just my opinion folks, look at the ample data...

Sorry if that offends the staff that work out there...

I've never been to wwc but it soundsvto me that wwc only wants to open the trails for race events only and no longer open it for public use if that's the case then they need to do the same thing for rafting and kayaking. Only open the white water part for events and not let the public use it. I bet they wouldn't stay in business long if the did.

I don't have the paperwork in front of me but I believe it is a 40 year lease (it is at least 20).  The lease is for the entire property of ~ 270 acres (the additional acreage to put them above 300 acres is other land they have access to).

Not sure it is even $1 per year, but they may have to pay $1 to make it legally binding or something like that.

If anyone really wants to see the document let me know via PM and I will dig it up.

By the time this thread reaches five pages, so much speculation and misinformation will be digested and spread by the masses that the Wise Water Center better consider ramping up their defenses...

I heard that hundreds of years ago, Spanish Conquistadors were exploring the land around where the WWC is now. They were attacked by hostiles and before fleeing, buried chests of Cherokee gold for safe keeping. During set-up for a mud run a year ago, a race promotor found an ancient map with clues to the location of the buried indian gold and a secret decoder ring for the map. Instead of turning the map over to the authorities they've been frantically trying to locate the secret, Cherokee gold somewhere on the trail system. To get more time for treasure hunting they keep the trails closed. They have to open it occassionally just to keep suspisions low...

I like it there. Just want to go there and ride. And spend money. Is that too much to much to ask? Really?
I am sorry if offended any of the staff.

Would be interesting to know whether the lease contract mentions "public use or accessibility"

If the emergency situation is any indicator, I came across an injured lady half way into to toilet bowl a few months ago. The WWC is not responding to emergencies, we had to go through 911.

It really is very simple....  If you want to ride WWC then go ride.  As long as you are outside of the 24hr rain rule WTF are they going to say or do?

All I know is when the Catawba red clay is wet, it sucks.  Literally.  I have been on a mountain bike 3 times in like 20 days around here.  Its not like the trails have been dry.  I have been on my road bike, and those that know me know I prefer my road bike hanging on a wall.  Oh....Sherman was Sweeeet Saturday, but my skills  Undecided are going south with the rain.,
