Well that's just horsesh*t.  If you can't ride wet trails, that's fine, but don't assume that those who can aren't using skills to stay up.  They're just skills you don't have (Just kiddin....sorta) Wink

With all those parking fees from those big events going on, they should have a fulltime dedicated trail crew out there with squeegees prepping the trails for the masses after just a mere sprinkle.

Until then, grab a race plate and go ride... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

-Like a few of us, I'd like to thank Lee for the trail work he does at WWC. he and I have had lengthy dicussions about what goes on out there. he's a good dude, and he's in a tough spot between riders, supervisors, and event promoters.

I'm honestly just wondering why they are still closed.  I don't think it has rained there in 5+ days.  Surely, they trails have dried out by now?  Maybe not.  But maybe they are working on the trails?  Maybe they are closed because they are building up the other obstacle course stuff?

Now that I work 10 minutes away, I'm dying to have them opened again for post-work riding Smiley

Overall trail was in great shape. Aside from the south main that has 1" ruts all through. It got beaten up bad and is still wet. I'm not sure if the X Terra signs that are still up have anything to do with it.
Lake Wylie is higher than I've ever seen it.

Had to meet with Lee last night for non-WWC business.  Interesting conversation.  He doesn't BS me.  He knows how I feel about the WWC... haven't bought a year pass ever and have only paid to park less @10 times since they started the whole pay-to-park thing... maybe.

Since I didn't ask to share details of the conversation, I won't.  You would be surprised at the amount of work they've done lately in an effort to get the trails open/keep them open.

Something I thought about on the way to work today...

Why in the name of all that's green and spendable would the WWC keep the trails closed if they could possibly open them?  How many Thirsty Thursdays have gone by already this summer with 0 mountain bikers doing the whole "ride and hang out/drink/eat" thing?  How many one day $5 parking fees have they lost?  How much have they paid employees to work on the trails trying to get them open only to get dumped on again?

And the one thing I don't understand...

I've ridden WWC/Catawba when it was slightly wet.  Certain sections, no matter what they/we do, are a mess.  Like red clay clumping up all over the bike, drivetrain destroying, rut making, miserable crap.  Nothing I'd want to do, especially when we have so many better options in the area.  So why are so many anxious to ride in it?

I could rant on.  I won't.  Get a chance to talk to Lee?  Listen.  You might feel slightly differently about this topic.

Here's some facts (as of July 11):

-- Rain has fallen somewhere in Mecklenburg County daily since June 23.

-- Since June 1, more than 11.7 inches has fallen at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, Charlotte's official measuring station. That compares to 5.18 inches in an average year during that time.

-- Parts of northern Mecklenburg and Cabarrus counties have received more than 16 inches since June 1.

-- Rain has fallen on 79 of the 192 days so far this year in Charlotte. That puts us on pace for the 10th-highest number of rainy days in a year.

-- Thanks to the rain and clouds, we've had only four 90-degree days this year in Charlotte. The record for the smallest number of 90-degree days is eight.  So we're likely to finish with one of the smallest number of 90-degree days in a single year.  (heat/sun dries up trails)

-- Meteorological summer runs from June 1-Aug. 31.  So far, our 11.7 inches during that period puts us on pace for the wettest summer ever.

Great post, Dicky.  Many here also know my history/feelings about WWC.... That said, this post is spot on and I couldn't agree more.

Paid my annual pass $40 and consider it well worth the money, it's rained a
lot this year so not had chance to ride much. I like the fact they close the Trails
when conditions are unsuitable. Who wants to ride on wet trails anyway!, mud
tears up the drive train and brakes, doesn't make sense. Suprised USNWC had
the Xterra Event!, in monsoon conditions. However they changed the Bike part
to two laps of the Lake and East Main Trails which really got tore up. Watching
the race reminded me of the races we had before the USNWC was built. Folks
would ride no matter what the state of the trail, sometimes I would see a whole
line of F## arse Guys on ATVs just tearing up the Trails. It was not safe to Park
at the old entrance there were so many Car break ins. Yes it's well worth my $40
just for the security the Centre provides. I don't mind waiting for the Trails to dry
out, there is also somewhere else to ride.

I think it's pretty clear that the answer to my original question (Why haven't they opened at all in a month), is that it's simply been too wet.  And despite their efforts to drain them and aid in the drying process, we've simply had too much rain for the trails to dry out enough.

Makes sense to me.  It sucks and I'm still going to whine about all the rain still Smiley , but it is what it is.

Informed comments from an industry insider are not going to bode well with "big" white water conspiracist.
