Well, the online status says trails are open. I didn't believe it, not after yesterday. So I called, and the automated system indicates that trails are open as well. It has been sunny and hot, I guess the trails are good to go.

It's a midsummer miracle!

Figure 8, Thread and parts of the Green trail are a sloppy mess in a good number of places.

Yep.  I did a warm-up lap on the lake loop and decided to call it a day and grab a beer.

Props to the folks at the WWC...they clearly spent a significant amount of time trying to fill in the muddy spots with a gravel mix.  But, those trails just need more hot/sunny days.

I did a full reconnaissance mission at WWC yesterday to see what shape the trails were in after not being open in almost a month.  I started with WWC East and those trails are totally fubar at the moment.  The triathlon completed destroyed it, rutted from one side of the trail to the other in most parts and mostly a big mud puddle.  Its going to take a ton of work to get this trail back into shape.  The rest of the trails weren't too bad just a couple of bad spots.  The lake loop got pretty tore up near the end but for the most part did not see the damage WWC East got.   There are many small trees down across the trail but most are small and can be easily hopped.  There is one huge tree down that requires a hike-a-bike on Toilet Bowl.  Carolina Thread was surprisingly dry in most spots except for the low lying part near the turn around.  It was an awesome ride, bike picked up about 10 lbs of mud by the end.

I've ridden at WWC 3 times this week, and I guess it comes down to expectations, as I thought the trails were great.
Wednesday was a short ride, East main and Lake loop.  East had its share of moisture, Lake was good.

Thursday rode the classic 14ish miles (no east, no thread trail), minus toilet bowl (assuming it would be unusually wet).  Everything was in good shape with the exception of the same mudholes that people seem to keep riding through on south main on the wide parts.  Lake Loop was wetter than the day before, but still 100% rideable in its entirety.

Friday I rode every mile of every option of every trail.  Other than the aforementioned spots on south main and low spots on thread trail, it was a great MOUNTAIN bike ride.  I like smooth and fast, but most of the time I could do the majority of the WWC on a road bike with slick tires.

Now I just need to find somebody to wash my bike! Cheesy

Are all the trails at WWC as rooty as the lake loop is?  I'm not looking for a fireroad, but at least yesterday it seemed like 80% of it had a ton of exposed roots.  For a newbie on a hardtail, those open stretches at the end sure feel awesome when you tear through them.  It may just be skewed perspective after being forced to ride 50mi of road waiting for some trails to open up the last week.

Yes.  Wooded trails will have roots.  On rougher sections practice letting your legs, not your butt, bear much of your weight.  They will act as natural shock absorbers and it will also give you more stability and control.  Once you get the hang of it you will enjoy your rides more.

Yes, the Lake Loop is a "green" trail meaning it has the lowest difficulty of all trails out there.

Thanks for the tip.  I was out of the saddle for the really big roots near the base of trunks, and for all the hills, bumps, and most of the "climbs".  I'll try to do more of that next time.

Are there any less wooded trails you recommend where I can knock out some mileage and get some speed for now?

Greenways.  McAlpine and McMullen are two good ones.  Just take care with pedestrians.

Sherman Branch is great option.  It is "wooded" but the trail has a lot of flow. Couple tech sections, but less elevation and roots than WWC.

Have fun.

Uwharrie! Help us move some cut up downed trees tomorrow at 9:00 and then ride some very flowy singletrack  and all the fireroads you can handle.

Hahaha, come on now, there has to be something between a paved greenway and the lake loop at the WWC?  I've ridden LSC Greenway some connecting from Scaleybark back to uptown but I was thinking something still dirt and less pedestrians.

Thanks, I think I may give that a try this Saturday if the weather holds up!  Guy at work recommended Sherman, said the technical stuff has bypasses if you're new.

I wouldn't mind checking out Uwharrie but I've got a friend's birthday tonight so I don't think I'll be in condition to drive out there for trail work tomorrow AM.  I plan to help out with trail work in the future, I know they don't maintain themselves  Grin

WWC trails are very rooty this year due to the rain... and the abuse the center has put the trails through. They will eventually embark on a root thinning exercise... It been a couple of years so it is about that time

I think you'll find the lake loop is the least rooty ride save greenways. Sherman is faster but all in all Sherman is more technical than the Lake Loop, especially this year.

THANK YOU.  I rode Sherman for the first time this afternoon and loved it.  I had to hike the bike over a couple of rock gardens and one of the drops and I took most of the technical bypasses but this was exactly what I was looking for.

The root factor at Sherman was 1/10 what it is at the WWC green/lake loop.  I loved how it had short climbs and had really good "flow".  I did the main + lake trails and liked it so much I may go out there again tomorrow.  Awesome trail!
