I'm hanging up the road bike for a while

Print Post
Was almost taken out by a side mirror on the Booty Loop this morning, and that's it for me.  I'm done.

On May 1st I was struck by a car in a right hook accident on a commute home from work.  Contusion/sprain on my shoulder, mainly AC joint and rotator cuff.  Did physical therapy for a month with OrthoCarolina and have been continuing exercises at home to help rehab my shoulder.   I've been back on the bike for a few weeks now, and mentally I just can't get over it.  I've tried my old routes into Waxhaw, tried riding the Booty Loop, and I just can't get over it.  The first few rides were full of intense anxiety and stressed me out an unbelievable amount, but I tried to push through it and hoped it'd get better.

I can't have fun with it anymore.  Each of my last few rides had one incident of someone buzzing by me super close, or someone cutting me off to take a turn, and I tried to shake it off like I normally would.  Then today I got buzzed so unbelievably close by a car trying to squeeze between me and a curb on Selwyn (the right lane was taken up by parked cars for the church there on the intersection with Providence), that I swear if I hadn't lifted my left arm when turning to look at the revving engine my elbow would've been taken out by the side mirror.

It's not worth it for me anymore.  I've been road biking for over four years now and logged nearly 10,000 miles.  But I don't want to become a statistic or a returning client for NC Bike Law (who have been great handling my current case, by the way!).  I'm going to stick with mountain biking, spending more and more time in the woods as the trails dry out, and start racing BMX at Hornet's Nest, and probably pick up running again after a few years off just to keep my legs occupied.  I've never stopped riding bikes and I never will, but I'm hanging up the carbon and the skinny tires and taking a much needed break.

I don't blame you....Something is off with the overall culture in this town....I don't think the masses will ever understand people on bikes....I can't really pinpoint it but it seems like there is this me first mentality to all of it....I was reading some posts from a local "real food" blogger the other day and it struck me as very odd....It seems as though everything around here (or perhaps everywhere) needs to be commodified.....Here I am reading this blog thinking how much simpler this form of living should make one's life all the while realizing that they are just trying to create a business for themselves and prove how much more awesome they are than everyone else...Maybe I'm reading to much in to all of this....Or maybe it's because I'm in a customer service roll and I'm tired of seeing the sense of entitlement people have over minor issues when there are actually people who are struggling in this world!  Sorry to pull so far from your original topic but I think in some ways it relates....

I agree there is a cultural problem..

But the sense of entitlement over minor issues?

Hey, I'm sure you have a hard time dealing with problems everyday. But when I purchase something I want it to work right the first time, and the way it was described by the sales person when I laid my hard earned money down (right the first time). If not it needs to be addressed the right way, which is as if it had worked right the first time. Not like some 3 year old put it together, or formulated company policy on how to talk the talk, but not walk the walk.

I mean it's sort of like paying taxes and not getting a bike lane. Is it that much to ask to live in a country or a community with a little less NASCAR/NBA/NFL worship and a little more brain power? Yeah I know, it's a money thing. And crumpled bikers are just another cost of doing business.

People who are struggling in this world is an unrelated issue, sorta. One that, as a consumer, is not my personal responsibility to correct.

"Sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me."

Point it, it's the deeds that count. And once Johnny azhole gets within the anonymity of his or her vehicle it's drop the facade, damn the torpedoes, etc.. full speed ahead. You frequently see about the same behavior from some bikers on mixed use trails.

As for the road bike thing, can't blame the OP. Road riding around these parts is in some ways a death defying act.

Road riding in general is asking for trouble.  Out west they had bike lanes and people take their chances. here it is suicide daily.  If there is anyone out there who doesn't get the "aww sh*t" feeling on EVERY road ride, speak up. And if some one does speak up, ...you lie.  Had my "brush" back in '86. Put me into barbed wire and I have been Mtn Bike Guy since.  Sad

I lived in Waxhaw for the first few months after I moved down here last year.  The guys riding with Bike Depot were great and, aside from getting used to the hills here, I still had a lot of fun doing it.  Since moving closer to the city last August my experience has been less than stellar.

I really thought I'd be able to recover after the accident, but it's just not worth it for me anymore. The stress levels far surpass the fun levels on every ride since the accident, and I'm just going to stick to the mountain bike instead since that is fun 100% of the time and I don't have to worry about some impatient A$$$$$e behind a steering wheel.

I was reading an article the other day that said bike riders are more likely to be hit by BMWs and luxury vehicles than any other types of car.  Studies have also shown that People in luxury vehicles will not stop for pedestrians using a crosswalk.

I have not been hit yet, but i have had several close calls this year with people making left turns at stoplights.

I live pretty far out.  Sucks everytime we want to go somewhere.  Really sucks to have to drive so far to ride mountain bikes.  Works in my favor for the road bike (which I only seam to ride when the trails are wet).

so you must be doing a lot of road riding then.

Luckily I don't live in Charlotte and where I ride for the most part people are nice(or atleast they don't try to run you over). I guess they are just used to so many roadies out and about.

I generally ride out in Concord or Union county and rarely feel nervous.  I live in Ballantyne so I travel down Audrey Kell a lot and generally feel safe.

Road riding in Charlotte is suicide? Hell, driving a car in Charlotte is suicide. Everytime i drive from the house to Ultimate in Matthews i feel like im going to have an anxiety attack. If your interested in doing a road ride, come down to Waxhaw. Less traffic and better scenery.

Sunday mornings, when Myers Park Methodist takes up one lane, are the absolute worst time of the week to ride the booty loop.

There are plenty of good group rides on the weekends.

I moved here last October from FL, I also was hit on my road bike (in FL). A ahole turned left into me, through me 20 yards into a guard rail (crossing an on ramp.) and I was in a bike lane! So I know your pain. I have come to the conclusion thats it's just people. Since I been riding there seems to be just one ahole on the road or trail (yes the trail!) that just doesn't give a flying F about you. But I always say Karma is a b***h! Cheesy

I love riding my road bike but sadly I agree that riding arou s here is not safe. It won't be even moderately so until they start building bike lanes. Share the Road will never really work because the roads are built for cars with no consideration for alternate forms of commuting. I'm sure it's a tough sell to foot the additional expense for bike lanes but I think that bike lanes and greenways really do have a positive impact on a community.  And they make the whole town look a lot nicer too IMO.

BTW, Ridefour15 was in a bike lane when he was hit.  The issue is drivers.  They are either distracted, have no common sense relative to bikers, and/or were never taught anything about bikers.  When the lady that hit Ridefour15 was interviewed by the police, she actually said, "I checked to make sure he wasn't in my blind spot."  And then she turned right into him.  This shows she has no clue how to coexist with bikes.  My solution to that is to ride where there are fewer drivers and/or ride with more bikes.  Most of the time that's a trail.  Often that is a group road ride or a solo ride on low-traffic country roads.  My point is, you can ride on the road relatively safely, you just have to pick your spots.

In my experience, the two models of car that are worst to cyclists are the Toyota Prius and BMW 3-series (I know there's a zillion numbers there, but still...).  But I've gotten just as much of a hard time from all other cars, trucks, SUVs.  People are ridiculous.

I spent my first 9 years of driving near or in Boston and have also spent a bit of time driving in NYC and parts of NJ.  Charlotte still infuriates me more than any other area I've driven before.  I really don't understand how so many bad drivers are concentrated in one area, because a half hour outside Charlotte in any direction isn't nearly as bad.

Found that out the hard way, I didn't even consider church times.  My only other times there were on a holiday and a Saturday.

Exactly.  I think if I ever do get back on a road bike, it'll be group rides only.  I've never had issues or felt unsafe riding in a group, especially ones with more than 5 people.  But I'm done riding solo, and done riding on the road at all for at least a few months.

I just got back from riding for a week in the Netherlands-  the undisputed best country in the world for bike lanes, right of ways, greenways, whatever.  A driver pulled out between my wife and myself and t-boned another car right in front of her (we were in a bike lane).

Sh*t can happen regardless of bike lanes.  Be AWARE, and be ASSERTIVE.  I've been hit twice, but never on the booty loop in my 16 years of riding on it.

And, the elderly are the absolute worst about giving you space, no matter what kind of luxury-car-class-warfare-instigations you want to throw out.

If riding in Union County (closest to Mek berg) on a weekend it's all good until about 7:45 AM then game on.  I won't consider a ride here on a weekday at any time of the day.

Props to anyone that gets back on their rig after a crash / near miss.

I have been lucky enough to ride without seeing major accidents happen in front of me but I ride my road bike a lot. Most Saturday mornings I ride out of the Spirited Cyclist and we ride less congested areas. I agree this helps as well as riding in groups. But the tense and potentially dangerous moments occur when impatient drivers are trying to pass riders that are sharing the same lane. Anyone who has ridden a roadbike knows this.  Drivers also pass close enough to show they are annoyed, honk, yell, I even had a guy flick a cigarette at me once as he passed.

I get that accidents can happen anywhere and obviously its important to stay alert. But bike lanes would be a big help for cyclist and drivers alike.  I think they exist for a reason and I wish we had more of them around here.
