Uwharrie Work Day 24 Aug
08/07/13 at 8:43pm
Print Post
Dear Uwharrie Trail User,

As promised we are rescheduling a workday to clear the Woodrun Trail System of down trees.

Over 30 trees have been reported down on Keyauwee alone.  We are contacting all chainsaw certified volunteers and need others to help move the debris from the trail

Looking for 4-5 chainsaw certified individuals and 15 to 20 volunteers to help spot and move cut trees.

Date: 8/24/13
Start time: 9:00am
Finish: 2pm

Please bring plenty of water as this type of work will require significant physical effort.

This project is also being supported by the Friends of Uwharrie.  This is a great organization working with all user groups for a common cause.  We are excited to have their support.

Please visit the Friends of Uwharrie site at (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

As always thank you for your continued support!

Uwharrie Trails & Conservancy

Please rsvp if you can make this event by either replying to this email or calling me (Brian) at 704-438-5663

I would be glad to help if I qualify. I am certified at LNSP, but don't know about URE. I could just help clear if nothing else.

Doc, how do you transport your chainsaw thru the forest? I have a Bob trailer and it takes a lot of travel time out of the work?

What else do we need (besides more NFS certified cutters)?  Need the quad or other stuff from the trailer?

Should we tell the FS that we are coming to see if they can add one or more cutters? If we had 3 or more cutters and several workers we might could clear the trail.

Hey Jim, I talked to Tom at NM tonight and I think there will be 4 certified guys to do the cutting. I will come and help clear debris and what ever is needed. We will need lots of hands to clear the trail. I will bring all my logging tools just in case they're needed.

4 chain saws - that's great!

Who else can make this trail work day? Let's get a large crew out and get Uwharrie back on line.

I, for one, plan on riding the trails Saturday after working on them. People, look at it as a chance to get a sweet ride in as well as helping out.

I don't think I can make it Saturday. I don't trust this piece of crap Mazda Tribute I  bought from Toyota of North Charlotte to make it there and back. The rear differential is not sounding too good. I've got to get a junkyard differential to fix it before I drive it too far. Besides, I have way too much work to do at LNSP, so I'll work up there. You'll get all the work done and have a good ride!

Thanks anyway Mike - good luck with that truck.

I'll bring my bike too- but may be too old to both work and ride - that is unless we get plenty of helpers!!!

Anyone else?

Doc, I can bring my bob trailer for your chainsaw. Then you, Advocat, DursRemote and I can ride out to the most remote tree and work our way towards the people who are on foot.  I can pull the trailer, on problem. If you want to call me I'll PM my #.

I have a BoB trailer also. If you want me to bring it, let me know today so I can throw it and my hardtail in the HHR tonight.
My Santa Cruz does not have the adapters to mount the BoB.

Great thanks Gonzo. There may be a couple of folks coming who haven't replied here but if we could get 2 to3 more that would be great. Come on - give up your morning to ride Uwharrie in the afternoon....

Oh yeah,  they say riding Uwharrie is like riding in the mountains so it should be 10 degrees or so cooler out there too. Right?  Wink

Sorry I can't make it . I picked up a differential today and I am going to change it in the morning. If it was a Mazda instead of being made by Ford, it wouldn't have been a problem. If I get finished early enough, I'll be heading up to LNSP to do more work. You guys have fun riding and hope you have lots of success with the work.

Looks like its on for tomorrow.  Meet at the main parking lot at 9 and the forest ranger will be there to meet with us.  Hopefully we get enough help to get the trails clear again.  Feel free to come on out and help.

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

First half of white tail is clear. Second half needs another work day.  Had a lot of help today from the "freinds of uwharrie" .   These are people who ride atv's and horses and do not use these trails.  Many thanks to them.  They were a huge help!

When I was told that there were 40-50 trees down I thought that was an incredible exaggeration. I was very wrong about that. I think we had 21-22 people, 5 of which were sawyers, spread out at 3 location on the trail to try to get them all. It took 6 hours of nonstop work to get the trail cleared.
Over on White Tail there are between 15-18 trees down on that section. It really is not worth riding down and we only did so we could see how many were down. Like Tom said the top part is fine. The first two trees are down just before the muddy section with the dip in it coming from top to bottom of the trail with the remaining trees on the lower section. Two of the trees have their trunks across the trail and are maybe 30 inches in diameter.
As Tom said we had help from a lot of different user groups including equestrians, jeepers, and hikers. Some of the people have never used this side of the park and never will. But they gave up their Saturday to help get them open.
There is still a fair amount of debris down but the trail is in good shape. There are some weeping areas and the creeks are deep.

Thanks for posting some pics.  That trail took a beating from the storms and it felt great to be able to ride it after a good trail work day.  Many thanks to all the people who showed up and worked to make this possible.
