Me and some friends were planning on hitting Tsali this weekend.  Does anyone know whether or not it will be open in the midst of the Government shutdown? Cry

It is my understanding that national forest will be open, (how would you close them), but services at the parks will not be available.  Camping areas will be closed, informational services will not be available.  But again this is only my understanding....

I saw a white F150 with a US Gov't plate rolling down the highway this morning.  You should be fine.

great question.

I am flying to Moab on Thursday, will Slick Rock be closed?  There is a gate where you pay a fee, so they can close it??

I would anticipate the USNFS to close the forests with barricades. They did this in 1995 during the last shut down out west. I know because we were trying to use the SantaFe NF in NM. Check with the USFS district office. There will be a message on their answering machine.
Renoirbud: Call one of the bike shops in Moab. They will know the status. Chilipepper Bikes comes to mind.
Not everyhting is Forest Service out there. Some is BLM land and they are less restrictive.
Good Luck!

Outerbike was pro-active and posted this;

The Outerbike demo event and all of our rides are not affected by the government shutdown. Moab trails are open! We have heard, however, that while the BLM campgrounds will stay open, they will not be re-stocking toilet paper. So stock up on the TP...

I just called, and all of the Kerr Scott trails are closed as of Thursday...

So much for my trip to Warrior Creek on Sunday.  Sad

National Forests are going to be a bit of a grey area I think simply because of their size and accessibility.

I wouldn't be surprised if they closed Tsali.  It's an easy area to close as there's only one major road into the area.

In contrast, Pisgah will probably be open for the most part because 2 major roads run right through it.  The campgrounds/picnic areas might be closed but the trails will likely be open.

So, on the news I heard that they barricaded the open air memorials in DC. Vietnam, Korea and WWII. Seriously how much money was spent to do this compared to just letting them sit. Ok, turn off the lights at night, I get that. but to barricade them, that just barn storming to pi$$ off and inconvenience citizens/tourists.

Most National Forest Facilities Closed

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Most facilities in the national forests in North Carolina are closed due to a lapse in federal government funding.

The closure affects offices, many campgrounds, day use areas, bathrooms, shooting ranges, off-highway vehicle trails, fee areas and other facilities managed by U.S. Forest Service in the Nantahala, Pisgah, Uwharrie, and Croatan National Forests.

The following campgrounds, operated by concessionaires, will remain open.

Pisgah National      Forest: Black Mountain Campground; Briar Bottom Group Camp;      Carolina Hemlocks Recreation; Cove Creek Campground; Davidson River      Campground; Kimsey Creek Group Campground; Kuykendall Group Campground;      Lake Powhatan Recreation Area; North Mills River Recreation Area; Sunburst      Recreation Area; and White Pines Group Campground.
Nantahala      National Forest: Cliffside Day Use Area; Van Hook Glade      Campground; and Standing Indian/Kimsey Creek/Hurricane Creek Recreation      Complex.

Visitors may still hike, fish and use undeveloped recreational areas of the national forests during the closure period. No restrooms or trash collection will be available at trailheads, and visitors are encouraged to practice Leave No Trace ethics. Only essential Forest Service employees, such as firefighters, will continue working during the closure. All volunteer activities are cancelled.

The National Recreation Reservation Service, available through (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links), will also be closed.

Looks like any area that has a daily use fee in the USFS is barricaded.
This includes campgrounds and recreation areas.
