Winter Short Track Series Less Than 1 Month Away!
12/19/13 at 3:30pm
Print Post
Now in its __ season, the 5-race Winter Short Track Series begins on Sunday, January 12, 2014 at Renaissance Park in Charlotte, NC. The 1.3 mile course brings a unique and fun style of racing to the Charlotte region: short-track mountain bike racing with a hole shot, banked turns, climbing and wide open sprints. It's a cross between a criterium, BMX, cyclo-cross and single-track, and it's super fast and spectator friendly. Charlotte Sports Cycling and the Tarheel Trailblazers have worked hard to create a trail that's exciting for the race participants AND for spectators.  There is a race category for every level from the first-time racer to the experienced elite amateur and professional.  Participants, based on category, will race 15 to 25 laps on the fast course. All of the events will be held at Renaissance Park. We will have food, an event photographer, and music at all of the events.

There will be TEAM COMPETITION as well as individual. In Team competition team members across all categories earn points.  The points will be derived from a new system called "Pack Points".  Pack Points are based upon the number of people racing in your category, with a minimum of 10 points for the winner. The top six people from your team will be scored.  Cash and trophies go to the top 3 teams.

Ready to register?  Sign up before January 1st and get a series discount! (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Not for the Winter or Summer Series.

We are not sanctioning the series this year. Its pretty simple, its more cost effective to use private insurance than to permit the race through USAC. The actual cost of insurance is a little higher using a private insurer but when you factor in the $10 one-day USAC fee and the number of participants we have in the Winter and Summer Series that actually pay the one-day fee, it less expensive for the majority of the event participants. Several expenses have increased for 2014, including the park rental and insurance so we had to increase the registration fee. I couldn't imagine charging a new person or a person who doesn't have a license $25 to race and another $10 for the one day license.

The insurance we have arranged for the series is event specific and has a liability and accident medical policy. The accident medical policy is just a secondary policy or I guess, if you're crazy enough to race without insurance, your primary policy. It has a $100 deductible and pays up to $25k. But hey....everybody supposed to have insurance now anyway....right.

Anytime you make change, its going to effect/affect Huh some participants.  We just have to make the best decisions we can and move forward.

Neal, has the course been shortened? 15-25 laps is quite a few in 30-60min

If you want a better idea of how many laps and how fast go to last years results page and check out the class you plan on racing in.

Government has no reason to use common sense or be efficient as it pays no price for failure.

No one did 15-25 laps last year. Cat 1 maybe over 15 barely. Just curious to whether course was shortened

Check out the results and laps times at

The course will be the same length as last year. With the category sizes, we had to add a little to the course to provide better passing opportunities and more time between category starts.

"They" better show up and build it.

The former table top is now essentially concrete.  It would require a major effort to bring it back to any of its former glory.

There is a spot for some action right after the biggest bermed turn in the second part of the woods, although I would like to put in something spectator friendly closer to where all the other fun is right now.

Assuming there is a work day...

Assuming I can make it.

Dat.

Get on it.

I might have to race this year.  Want something to play on.

Perhaps a barrier made out of a junked car?

I'm assuming that guy wasn't clipped in for that bike to be in such a perfect trajectory while he is soon to be face planting on the hood of that Pontiac.  photoshop

Only a week away now.

Series pre reg rate goes up on Mon.  If you're on the fence, here's my logic...

I typically race at least 3 of the 5.  Showing up & paying day of is 3 X $30 = $90.

Pre reg thru tomorrow is only $100.  Extra incentive to do 'em all or, if only my typical 3 of 5, it's a $10 tip for a hard working promoter.  Wink.

From a spectator point of view.... I give the height a 7 out of 10.  Style 0, the landing to flat... a 20+ out of 10!  Taco/Face Plant/Lights out city.... LOL... felt bad for this guy!  I mean, this is about as cartoonish as it gets where the coyote runs smack into an object and is stopped cold.  No bouncing, no continued forward motion, nothing... just flattened out!
