Love? hate? or are they just nice to have with a dash of hype on the side?

For what it's worth it would be going on a rigid 29 ss bike with a 2.3 or 2.4 tire and an xc ish rider.....

Great on a rigid SS.  I put a Surly Knarde 29x3 tire on a Stans Flow for my son. Tubeless, running 15# and no problems.  Softens up the front nicely.  Not all rigid forks will accomodate the Knarde and I wouldn't want to put it on anything narrower than the Flow.  I have a Soul rigid fork and its just too close.

A wider rim is going to square up your tire more so they don't look like a light bulb. It will allow you to use less pressure and help remove some of the squirm you get.

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

I'm new to the Indian Trail area. Any recommendations on wheelbuilders within 20 miles or so?

Not sure if he is within 20 minutes, but Enoch does some nice work.  Road or mountain.

+1.  He is the one I would use.  He is in your 20 mile radius also.
