Relatively new to riding.. Is there an advantage to a riser bar vs a flat?  I'm kicking he idea around of a new stem n bar.  Just looking for opinions

I could be naive on this but I believe rise is just another way to add height for fit.  Sweep may change your wrist position to improve comfort, but rise with either a bar, stem, or spacers all help you dial in the fit.

On a different note, flat bars seem trendy now.

Agreed with above although I thought riser bars were the trendy thing now.

Flat bars for 29ers and riser bars for 26 and 650b are the most subscribed ways to dial in bike fit these days. Not sure about the "wider is better" trend. at least for XC. Too wide puts your upper body in an awkward position.

It is all personal preference and comfort.  It's like asking which is the best saddle or tires.  With that being said you do get extra credit towards official XC racer or Enduro (tm) status if you can color coordinate all of the bits on your bike.  So you know your bars need to match your seat, or your seat post, or your spoke nipples, hubs and bottom bracket.

Cool

Re wider bars;

Going wider bars and shorter stem has made a huge difference for me.  I used to run 680 to 700mm wide bars with 90 to 100mm stems, now I ride 740 to 777 bars with 50 to 60mm stems.

You need to borrow some parts and see what you like.
