Time frame to open trails

I want to start off by saying how appreciative I am for everything that everyone does on this board, especially those that monitor the trails to make sure they are rideable or not.  I have started doing some trail work at Riverwalk and I see the amount of work that it takes to get these in riding shape, and keep them that way.

With that being said I am wondering what the protocol is for deciding to open a trail.  For example I have a ride scheduled tonight for BYT and it is currently showing closed.  I know in the past someone has updated the condition around 2-3pm.  In a case like this could the call be made in the AM if the trail is open or not so we can make plans on where to ride earlier in the day?  If the issue is that you plan to open a trail in the afternoon if it doesn't rain all day, why not change the open status in the AM?  I know that a few people might ride it between AM and after work, but that is going to be few and far between.  Of those people, you have 2 types 1. Ones that aren't checking the boards anyways, 2. Those that get out there and if it is too wet know to exit.

I just think that a little predictive opening of trails would be ok.  If the trail manager said open to somewhere like BYT at 10am in lieu of waiting until 2-3pm, and it rained between those times, you can always change it back to closed.  I have to imagine that the trail managers aren't physically going out to the trails at 2, are they?  If they are, ignore everything above.  Cool

Fair enough.  I will just keep an eye on the boards.

Trail coordinators are volunteers who have full time jobs. I dont know of any personally that can go out to their trail and check it every single day.  Most of the predictions of open/closed is based off of rainfall totals and the nature of the trail. The TC's know their trail in and out and know what kind of rainfall it can handle and still be ok to ride. The open/closed status is updated as soon as the TCs feel that the trail can be ridden without damaging it.

When I have rain before my Ultimate Bike rides on Wednesday, I usually just cancel it. Even if the TC opens Beatty after the fact. Its just the way it goes...

"predictive opening" could be a slippery slope to give people an excuse to ride wet trails and/or it could cause much confusion to when a trail is open.

My advice for this rainy time of year is buy a road bike. Riding wet asphalt doesnt do anything but make you stronger on the trail Smiley

Another good point.  Not trying to reinvent the wheel, was just wondering.  I just thought that if the TC was planning on opening the trail at ~2pm, then they could at 10am and they close if it rains.  The number of people that will ride it between the AM opening and 5pm is minimal during the week I think.

Justin: ALL the trail coordinators and observers are volunteers. Most of us have jobs. Speaking for myself I cannot call off work to go check the trail. I suspect the others cannot either. The 24 hour rule is the basic. My main trail is Fisher. We  have had folks tell us it is good to go and get down there and the bikes coming off the trail look like and Udder Mudder had been conducted.
Sometimes we have someone trusted tell us and will change status on that.
I understand your frustration but it is what it is.
There was a lot of rain dumped yesterday. There was fog and not much sunshine this morning. I highly doubt the trails dried enough to open.

Tom,

I wasn't implying that you all didn't work.  Based on that I would assume that when the go/no go call is made it is made from somewhere other than the trails.  If that were the case, it seems like it could be made in the AM instead of the PM.

I am not trying to upset anyone.  Was just wondering if, based on the way things are done, if the trails could be opened earlier in lieu of the weather holding out.  If it stays the way it is, that is great too.  Was just wondering out loud.

As for BYT Bob makes the call. I have 3 keys out to open and close the trail. I personally can't drive over 45 min one way to check conditions. So if home page says closed respect what it says. I'm glad you have taken it upon yourself to get involved in doing trail work and get to see first hand to see the damage it can cause when ridden wet. Again check homepage.

I will be checking trail conditions around 5:30-6 at latest. I will open if ok. Over half inch there yesterday. Usually 24 hours is tight for that much, hence the on site inspection. Check website. I will not make predictions. Did that once. Not smart per post above.

Beatty was open all morning. Now it says "closed 6-10-14 12pm". That is tomorrow.
Is it open or closed at this particular moment? Or is that a "predictive closing" in anticipation of rain tomorrow?
