Carbon vs Aluminum-Trek vs Niner?

Print Post
Hey y'all,

So my Niner MCR9 frame cracked Monday, so obviously I need a new frame or bike. I like Niner's geometry a lot, but I don't know if I should jump to carbon or not, the price of aluminum is intriguing.

I thought about getting a Trek frame, partially because of the lifetime warranty.
Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks,
Caleb

Niner aluminum all the way. Good luck on any warranty issues with a trek carbon frame...

I'm kinda thinking the same thing with why not, but I have a year of high school left....so budget is tight. I have the money but I would rather not burn that much unless its really worth it. Thanks for the feedback.

By the way, I am competitive in the summer series races and would like to do some bigger and longer races. I don't know how that would effect other than carbon seems to be a smoother ride. Thanks again

I can tell you that my air 9 rdo beats me up worse than my aluminum stumpjumper single speed.  The carbon niner replaced a broken aluminum one.  The aluminum one that broke was the old design not the newer hydroformed one.  Niner warranties the carbon one for 5 years and the aluminum one for 2 if I'm not mistaken.

I ride a scandium Niner One9 and love it. And you can get some sweet deals on Niner aluminum frames. Don't really think you can go wrong. And being in high school you have plenty of time to get some really sick (and expensive) rides in the future. I will say that I have a carbon Asylum sscx bike and love that thing. The bike is an absolute rocket and I have taken it on some single track and it eats everything up (not super gnarly). I guess the best thing would be to demo some carbon if you can. What frames were you thinking about?

Not sure if Niner does but a lot of companies do a "crash" replacement on frames when they are out of the warranty that would get you on a new frame cheaper.....Maybe they would hook you a good deal on an SIR9 since they don't make the MCR anymore....

Good call. You should talk to Mark at The Cycle Path to see if he can help you with that. It looks like they will give you 20% off a replacement frame.

I was thinking either the Niner Air 9 or Air 9 Carbon. As far as Trek goes I was more toying with the idea because the team I am hoping to get on next year deals Treks.

The Trek Superfly is a nice bike - and they have aluminum and carbon versions.  I do not think that you can get Trek frames only...

If you race for a Trek team you might be able to get a nice discount on a Trek bike... so you might want to see what cheaper "frame only" options there are out there for you and save up so you can get a real nice Trek... maybe find out first if there is a deal for riding with the team you are interested in.

You should look at the Specialized Crave or Stumpjumper. Lifetime warranty, light weight and smooth ride. I love Niner but man...I've got a boneyard of warranty frames out back. Tongue

Niner will work with you on a crash replacement. Not free but discounted. Give them a call.

Be careful with Niner's carbon frames...

I have a buddy who is on his third RIP 9 RDO frame now in under two years.
First two cracks were right at the bond between the carbon frame and aluminum bb.
This last crack is a hairline on a chainstay. No bueno.

YMMV but be warned.

I appreciate the recommendations and advice, decided to go for the aluminum air 9. I'm used to Niner's geometry and I am really not in a position to get a whole new bike so just frame and fork worked out pretty well.

Thanks!
