broke a front spoke today. Is it necessary to pull the rim tape off to change it? I was hoping to avoid having to re-tape the wheel. Thanks

No, just keep the nipple from falling into the rim

You can put a couple of drops on the threads, if it doesn't come loose, then just poke a hole in your tape. Make you repairs and re tape that hole only. Sometimes I put a pice of extra sticky shipping tape over my Stans tape to help it stay down. .
