Road bike - calipers for bigger tire clearance

This is a question for the road bikers who try to squeeze the largest tires possible in their frame.

I have a Surly Pacer, which accepts fairly fat tires (Fatties Fit Fine), however, the top of the tire rubs the brake calipers when I install a 32c tire.

The frame will accept something MUCH bigger. I don't care about fender & tire clearance, just bigger tires.

Anyone know some higher clearance calipers? I have the stock Tektro R350 calipers currently.

It is time for a new wheelset anyway, so I'm thinking about some 650b rims and long reach calipers. Thoughts on that?

Point of this is to be able to throw some bigger cross tires or small mtb knobbies on it for snow/slush in the winter.

Dude you got it maxed out. Only way to get the clearance you want is to have post mount brakes. you might get another mm or so on top with different caliphers but I don't think so. THe mount bolt is the limiting issue. My roadie is tight  with 25c tires I can't imagine it with 28's or larger.

Would the arch on the calipher arm have a little more clearance if the pads and holder were a different thickness?

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

Yes, or if I move the quick release pivot thingy (new term) down to the right position. I have 1/8" of space now. I don't know why I didn't think of that before, but your post help me remember that the arms in fact move Smiley

Tektro BigMouth R539 has a bit more capacity as well as some fender room.
