Wont happen at Fisher. Conservation easements on the entire park by Meck county plus additional conservation easement by NCDENR on the side with the MTB trails. Prohibits all motorized vehicles and horses. The easement by NCDENR actually prohibits any trail but we were grandfathered in. Smiley

I'm sure other parks have similar restrictions/easements.

I'm fine with this.

But then, the prohibition or law against an activity is only as effective as the enforcement of.

Seeing where this is heading. I am somewhat curious.

Will everybody's rig suddenly be suspect, every time they off-load it at their favorite trail? And what to do once somebody is identified as having such a bike? Is it a police matter, or a social one?

For a place like Cane Creek or the White Water center, enforcement shouldn't be difficult. If reported. But then it's sort of like the leash law. At trails where no on-site authority exists, it will be substantially more difficult.

Do we have a bouncer?

I see how people might want Downhill and Free-ride bikes to have  power assist (although I would never own one).  All I hear my gravity friends talk about is either a shuttle run in Pisgah or Bit*hin about having to pedal their 35 lbs beast up the hill to ride down it.

I think it's both.  Politely tell them they are not allowed on the trails.  If they come back, get their tag number and report it to the local PD.

Good points and good analogy.  I think where they differ is most people when told they can't ride a vehicle somewhere tend to listen better than telling people they can't run their off leash dog at a park.  There are signs at Fisher Farm that say "Motorized vehicles prohibited in the park."  (Except the parking lot, of course.)  Actually caught a couple on Segway's years back. Tongue

I've been hard line in the past about the whole off leash thing at Fisher.  Now I don't care so much...except on the mtb trails.  I've had a few close calls where a dog ran in front of my or a friends bike and almost caused an accident.  Heard of a couple of isolated instances where riders were bitten but never reported it.  When I asked why, they always said "I didn't want to make waves. "

E Bikes, the new social program for cycling.

Perfect for those those who are not willing to work.
I work a job in which I am on my feet all day. So I can't have a little fun that's not as stressful on my legs. So I have a challenge for you. Pick a continuous up hill, say the Point Lookout trail in Old Fort. It's a paved asphalt trail. So I don't believe you'll have any problems with access. Then demo yourself a e-bike. Then proceed to make it to the top without putting any work or effort in doing so. You can then proceed in being social Wink

You're on the forums an awful lot for a guy that's on his feet all day.

Don't you know, ALL of Enoch's rides are effortless? It's not about the bike with him... he is a machine.

shoot, I'm gonna try me some moto-cross, since it's such an easy and social sport. Probably there's no work involved to race. And here I've been wasting my time on pedaling Cheesy

Electronic shifting systems?  I remember Mavic Zap in the 90s - short lived, however now there's comparable trying to break back into the market.  Here for the long term?

Here to stay this time.  Shimanio has been doing it for a while on road bikes and it doesn't seem to be going away.  They do offer the high end groups either way.

They also tried to it with an RF wireless system. They had a lot of interference with other units. Would suck to be racing and your rivals shifter is changing you gears! Shocked

My career is based on engineering and selling wireless LAN systems and other RF based solutions, and I would not want to trust this to shifting. Wired only at this point in time.  First hand bad experience is how much issue I have had with wireless cyclocomputers, especially under the power lines at the WWC.

Now, my thoughts on the "next best thing" in mountain biking, new alloys as mentioned above, electronic shifting, different ideologies on geometry, which, like business models, cycle frequently. Advancements in shock/fork technology.

Is fat bike a new technology, or just an expansion of the balloon tire thought process that has been around for 30 some years?

e-bikes: that not really a subject in my mind, and I have actually ridden one; what is the purpose?

I used to ride; now I just drink and cry about not riding.

It's just a matter of time.  Frankly I'm excited about it, I think this would be fantastic on MTB's... less wires/cables to work around linkages.  Eventually I'm sure it will all be tied together with a network... maybe 'Bike-tooth'... i.e., your suspension lockouts, dropper post, shifting, all controlled on one wireless network... effin cool.

I don't think wireless is the way to go.  I do think digital data transmission lines via fiber optic cables or a single copper cable to be the best option.  Most of the new road/cx bikes are coming already setup for internal electric wiring. Smiley  All of the Specialized carbon road/cx stuff is coming Di2 ready.

I just had a flashback to the early days of remote control cars.  I remember watching a guy's car "catch another signal" and slam right into a concrete pole.  Painful.

Never say never. I can see a day where people with limited physical capabilities (handicap and elderly for example) will get e-bike exemptions and gain access to anywhere a pedal bikes treks. That will be the tip of the sword. Are you gonna deny grandma the chance to huck the knar?
