Question for any one that has had a concussion

Long story short, yesterday I took a gap jump didn't clear it. I don't remember much after that point except sitting off to the side of the trail for 30 mins and walking back to the car.

Cracked my helmet, no other damage to me or the bike, thankfully. I have been really dizzy and disoriented the today. Outside of some general stiffness and that weird dizzy feeling I am ok.

Has any one had this happen to them before, how long till you got back on the bike again?

Everyone's case is different so you will probably get varying answers.  My nephew was in a car wreck and it took him over a week to get back to normal.  The bottom line though and what I would recommend is to probably seek some medical attention either now or if it continues or gets worse.  In some cases people can develop blood clots/bleeding which can be very bad if not diagnosed early.  I'm no doctor but if it was myself, I wouldn't risk it to save a buck.  If you have health insurance, use it.

+1 Get it checked out.  I'm a medic - last thing you need is to be driving down the road and have LOC.

I'll see how I feel in the morning if it hasn't improved I'll take you up on that.

I feel a little better today, better than I did last night after the ride. I just know I'm in no shape to ride today and the weather looks perfect. I am tryn to get into shape for the pisgah 55.5k race in May. This weather has me so behind, now this...

I have had 3. One of them knocked out my smelling things. It took about a month to get it back. The other 2 I went to the hospitial. Don't mess around with something like that. It took about a week to get back to riding. One of them it felt like I was in a strobe light for a few hours. Next time go faster better going long then coming up short!

Had a doozy in October 2013 at Fisher. Split the helmet in 5 places. Don't remember anything. After about a year a piece fuzzily came in about just before the crash, Dennis was with me. He said I kept asking the same question over and over. I remember being in the ER for only a few minutes. Wife said we were there the usual five hours. I lost about 3 days out of my hard drive. Still have some memory stuff that is fuzzy or missing.
Don't screw around with this. Get to the ER. The results are cumulative. It was not my first, but my worst.

I have had two concussions. One from a bike wreck and one not.

The first one was a doozy (non bike accident) and took me a solid two weeks to recover from. Very bad headache for almost the whole two weeks but got less and less every day. Not much dizziness though.

The second one was a bike accident and it wasn't as bad. I was dizzy for about 3-4 days afterwards but not real head pain to speak of. I did have a headache when I woke up in the hospital but it passed by the next morning.

Both times I was taken to the hospital (I was unconscious in both cases). The first one I spent two and a half days there and the second one was just an overnight.

No way would I deal with any type of concussion related thing with no medical attention. I am not a huge fan of doctors and hospitals and whatnot but with any head injury I would get checked out.

I wouldn't rush to the emergency room but...

Probably get checked out by at least your primary doctor. I have a few partners in my practice that specialize in concussion treatment so happy to give you some referral info if you'd like.

The main treatment is to minimize activity to a level that you can tolerate without ANY symptoms such as headache, dizziness, poor attention etc.

Current recommendations even include keeping atheletes out of school for mental rest.

I would gradually return to activities and see how you tolerate. Maybe just go for a brisk walk or ride around the neighborhood before trying to get back on the trail

PM me if you have any questions.

Thanks for all the posts.

I went to the doctor today and she ran me thru a bunch of tests. She didnt feel a cat scan was needed but she wants me to come in for a follow up on Friday.

Till then Im supposed to stay off the bike and off these screen as much as possible. After Fridays appointment she will suggest I either wait some more time or I might be able to go to a stationary bike.

If all goes well she said in the course of a week of stationary biking then potentially jogging I would be able to resume light biking. No more gnarly gaps just yet!

Hopefully I won't be sidelined to long! Wish me luck,
