Converting 3x crank into 1x

Have a 3x Deore Crankset and I want to convert it to a 1x.

Looked online and seems like people either say "get a 1x specific crankset because the chain line isn't right" or "its fine do it!"

anyone had any experience with converting a 3x crank to a 1x?

If you slap it where the middle ring was your chain line will be the same as when you ride in your middle ring.... Do it it'll be fine.... I've done it tons of times... Just get some short chain ring bolts

Oh yeah don't forget to shorten your chain using front ring plus largest back cog not run through deraileur and add a link...

I've done it before and had no problem. It was with a 3x9 compact crank and on a single speed.

Agreed, a 3x crank works really well using the middle ring location.  Don't forget you will need shorter chainring bolts.

I saw a great video on YouTube, I think it was from MB Review, some English dude. Just search "converting a triple ring dérailleur to a single."  I haven't dropped a chain yet.

Another previous 3x10 to 1x10 convert here.  I utilized the center ring and bought a "chain keeper" from MRP.  Just the one that went over the top.  It was a bottom bracket mount model.  I have since upgraded, but had no issue w/ this setup.  Very inexpensive swap and dropped a 1lbs of weight off the bike.  Winning!

I use a narrow-wide chainring from Raceface, no need for the chain keeper.
