On the WWC South Main trail, there is a short technical climb after going parallel with the river for about 25 yards.  You don't see it until you are right up on it and is an sharp left turn from the direction you had been traveling.  I think its between Goat Hill and Weigh Station.

There is a tree on right.  It seems like some are going right of the tree to avoid climbing the roots to the left of the tree.

How is supposed to be done?  I'm going there this afternoon and will take a picture but hope to have some input before than.

Thanks!

I go to the left of the tree over the roots.  Momentum is your friend in that spot.

The roots. Makes it more challenging and will prepare you better for other adventures outside of the city

The past few times now that I know its coming up I speed up only to find others stuck there and have to stop!

Good to know it can be done.

You can bunny hop up that section if you can carry enough speed.
I can't do it every time, but when I get it right those root hardly slow you down.

Official route is over the root.  The line to the right of the tree is a rogue line that has appeared over the course of the last month or so.

I tried riding up the little piece of root next to the base of the tree on the left and it's no problem at all. You just need to spin like crazy and know that it's there. Patty told me about that way up.

I've noticed quite a few "rogue lines" popping up at WWC recently.  I'm guessing that the rental bike crowd is venturing out on other trails than the lake loop.  As soon as someone sees that another biker has taken an easier route around a hard spot, it seems like the trail then moves over to the easy section.  I stick on the original lines that seem to be used sparingly anymore.  Most noticeably is the first sharp left of goat hill.  Used to need skill and lungs to get up it, but seems like skill is slowly being phased out...   Tongue

Edit:  Forgot to answer the OP.  Carry some speed into the turn, pop your front wheel over and as soon as it's back on the ground, pop the rear wheel over.  Simple as pie and makes you look like you know what you're doing!

To be fair his happens a little more during race season too.  I have been guilty of picking the "fastest" line at times and I would guess others can say the same.

I have an old picture of it just so happens.

I put a red outline around the area I always go up; if you hit it here you just have to have momentum; I wheelie a tad to make it easier/faster but you can ride up the root here without wheeling / hucking front up.  Right before this one there is another uphill climb with a root at the top that you have to cut to the inside of if you want to miss it..... just remember it's right after that area and you need to hammer it since the one you're talking about does come up on you in a blind corner

EDIT: I just noticed the red oval is a bit to the left of what I wanted; to clarify; I ride up where the roots meet at base of tree and form a /\

Thanks for the replies.  Made it about halfway yesterday with two attempts and similar results.  I had lost my momentum on the climb before and could not get enough speed between the two.  I also saw two other people do it so I have a lot good information now.

This is the only obstacle on blue trails at WWC I haven't conquered.   Respecting my wife's concern for my safety, I've promised myself I won't go on a black trail until I'm an near expert, albeit a slow one, on the blues.

Honestly there is nothing on the blacks that is IMO as hard as clearing this root; only thing about blacks is the steepness and length of the hills... sure there are a few "difficult" areas, but they are mostly downhill...

It's a mix of momentum plus a front wheel lift into a sort of pedal kick.  I ride the contour towards the stump of the tree and use that as a sort of berm to flow to.  This is one of those graduating types of techniques that initially seems impossible, but once you get it becomes easy.  I don't really roll up it.  I try to place my front wheel on the top shelf and lift the rear wheel up after.

The inverted "V" at the right hand side of the red outline is my normal line also. I try to carry a little speed into it and un-weight the front wheel when I hit it.  Once the front wheel is over, I don't really try to lift the rear.  I just shift my weight forward when the rear wheel hits and pedal.

I've noticed a lot of rougue lines out at anne springs as well.    They seem to be in areas where someone has just straigtened out the trail; not really in a technical spot.
I almost always stop and drag a few branches over the new cut thru.

I can maybe see in races where someone is picking the fastest line, but
in general I can't see why someone would cut a corner.

maybe trying set set a KOM? or PR I guess.

That's what I had thought.  I'm just trying to give my wife piece of mind that I'm not going to injure myself too bad.  I figure that time it takes to overcome obstacles like this will give me the time to practice in other areas.
