That's what I had thought.  I'm just trying to give my wife piece of mind that I'm not going to injure myself too bad.  I figure that time it takes to overcome obstacles like this will give me the time to practice in other areas.

I wouldn't go off that - look at all the serious injuries at Sherman... I would rather fall @ 6mph on Carpet than 18mph @ sherman... which I recently did.

You are right, While you might fall on this root, it is unlikely that you will be seriosly injured.  You might jamb a finger or twist an ankle, but not enough speed and energy to do any real damage.  You are on the right plan, keep trying it until you get it, that what makes you a better rider....

I've been hurt at sherman twice (last time being 2 weeks ago that also wiped out my helmet, prescription sunglasses, painful walk back to the car, and a week off the bike).  All crashes involved speed.  Things can  happen fast out there.

Success!

I have probably have ridden this trail almost a dozen times since I first posted this.  Today, I just kept going to back and trying again until the 5th time, I just went right up.

BTW, the trail gnomes have blocked the alternate route.

Nice work, Nuke!  That section is a little tricky and takes finesse, skill, and a lot of determination to clear.  Soon you'll be smiling every time you hop up those roots because you'll see your progression and remember what it felt like the first time you cleared it.

Note that falling on anything hard such as a big root does present risk even at slow speed.  I stalled several years ago at Anne Springs in a sharp, off-camber turn.  I was worn out and think I was stopped by a big root.  Regardless, I fell to the side and introduced my pelvis to a big root and got to take home a very sore area and large multi-colored bruise.  Another day may have brought a fracture or full break outright.  The fall happen too fast, and I wasn't able to release my foot in time.
