Chain problem

I added an attachment in hopes that it will help clarify my problem. Forgive my paint skill, but I didn't get a pic the last time it happened and wasn't willing to have it happen again.

I have a 2x set up full suspension bike. Occasionally when I am riding in the smaller sprocket the chain will jump up and track over my chain guard (red line). I have been riding with this set up for almost 8 months now with 0 issues. Then in my last 2 rides it almost happens every time I am in my smaller sprocket.

There hasn't been any crashes or anything outside of miles on the bike. What can cause this?

When was the last time that rear hub and freewheel was serviced?

The hub is less than a year old (hope pro 2 evo). I was thinking maybe the derailleur?

Chain suck?  Try lubing the chain good, but sounds like new chain needed.

What kind of drivetrain maintenance have you done over the last 8 months?

About 6-7 months ago I replaced the cassette, sprockets, and derailleur. It hasn't happen to me at all until just the last 2 rides. I down-sized from a 3x to a 2x and went from a long derailleur to a medium length one. So the clearance is pretty tight.

I'll give the chain a good scrubbing and re-oil it. I hope its that simple. Testing it sucks though... climbing in a 36 tooth is less than enjoyable.

Can you clarify that you mean front chainring when you say sprocket?

You may also want to test the chain to see if it is worn with a chain checker.  If you didn't replace the chain when you replaced the rest of the drive train, it may be past worn.

Did you remove any chain links when you  switched from 3x to 2x?

Yea, the front chainring. (attached to the crank) Sorry my bike tech vocabulary is a little deficient. Now that you mention it, I dont remember if I replaced my chain when I did the rest of the drive train.

Yes, I removed links when I did the conversion. I remember this very well because I took out to many links and ended up bending my derailleur hanger when I came down from a jump. (didnt account for the extra needed when my rear suspension was engaged)

Thanks for all the replies btw. I appreciate it.

If you're uncertain of replacing your chain definitely replace it.

Worn chain. Very dirty chain. Or a sticky chain link will do that.
We old timers used to have gadgets to keep it from happening...

Cleaned the chain but I won't be able to get out till saturday morning. Hopefully that will do it. I Don't want to buy a new chain, hoping to get a little more out of this till I upgrade this fall to 10 speed.

Thanks again!

Chains are cheap, definitely cheaper than rings and cassettes.  I swap chains at the 50% mark on the Park chain checker.  Any more than that and I have had skipping issues with the new chain on worn cogs or rings.

I just took a measuring tape to my chain and at 12 links I'm over 1/16" (12 1/16"). From what I read, I guess it's time to replace.

There are going to be about 1000 people converting to 11 speed in a week or two.  If you can hold out and buy up their old 10 speed stuff.

Popular thought is that once it hits 1/16" of stretch its done.  Put a new chain on and I'll bet your condition improves. Smiley

Running a worn chain on new rings and cassette, don't be surprised if you have a skipping problem with the new chain.  Worn chains wear new cogs very quickly!  If it happens, it will be in the gear(s) you run in most.

Swapped the chain. Took it for a little test ride and it happen again. Right as I shifted the front from large to small. The chain jumped/climbed the chain guard again.  Angry

Starting to think you single speed guys might be on to something.

It's a brand new chain, same length as the old one (counted the links twice).

Going to think about it some more. Might just have to drop it off some where and admit defeat.

How long did you ride the old chain on the new chainrings and cassette?  Too long and you may have already caused wear to them.  If one is worn badly I typically recommend replacing them all.  All 3 components will have the same wear pattern.
