There is nothing to ride around that area Mountain bike riding wise.  Smokey Mountains does not allow mountain bikes on any trails.  Road riding options are plentiful and I would recommend cades cove early in the morning

There is one small trail just outside of gatlinburg but it's private and they charge a lot of money for a short 2-3 mile ride.  I rode it one year.  It was interesting but not worth the cash.  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I asked one of the locals and they all drive over Pisgah or tsali.  Really makes you appreciate all the resources we have around here.

Shearing the shaft member after a hard ride is acceptable in my book.

Drive up to Knoxville... about 40+mins - hour away depending where you are

Or, you could always ride the Cades Cove Loop (road) but it could be pretty heavy with traffic.

I'm not sure I would ride a road bike ANYWHERE around there. This is coming from someone that rides a road bike regularly. It is too curvy, too narrow, with too many tourist that are not paying attention in thier PLUS size tanks.

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

Yeah indeed.  Cades Cove can be a nightmare... it would have to be a leisurely ride, not one where you are pushing pace around blind corners.  I would only do it very early/late hopefully when the traffic is down.

Every Wednesday morning the Cades Cove loop is closed to vehicles so if you want to ride it, try it then.

If you have the time, drive south through GSMNP, Cherokee and Bryson City to the trails at Tsali, on Fontana Lake.  There are 4 trails and are pretty "flowy" with some good climbs, switchbacks and the Thompson Loop has a good downhill to finish the loop (if you ride counter-clockwise)  Trail usage alternates between MTB and horses, so every day has two open trails for MTB.  There is a campground there too, so if you want to spend the night, you can then ride the other two trails the next day.
