Doing some trail work and now 2 weeks later I'm still dealing with it...

Any suggestions. Just looks like a red rash and red bumps.

Doctor....would be my first choice... My coworker would get that stuff bad and would get a shot for it. It would dry up within days.

When I got poison ivy I was desperate to stop the itch. I mean desperate. After searching all over online and trying all kind of odd suggestions, the one thing that seemed to actually work was running the section of my arm the rash was on under very very hot water....as hot as I could stand it for several minutes and then drying it with a paper towel (don't rub) and then covering it with lots of Calamine lotion. It will stop itching for a few hours...then you have to do it all again. But it gives you relief for a little while and makes you stop messing with it which allows it to dry up and heal.

Lye soap always helps my son. It cuts down on the itching and stops it from spreading.

Go see a doctor and get a shot you should see a huge difference in 24 hrs.
You will also likely also get a prescription for an anti-itch cream.

I had to do a lot of reading about the topic when I moved to Charlotte.

One thing, it doesn't spread.  Exposure is what counts as far as overall reaction.  You have a limited amount of time to remove the oils.  After that, it's reaction and releasing histamines.

The hot water thing... awesome.

Here's some good REAL and recent info:

If you have had it for 2 weeks and it hasn't let up go to your Dr. for a shot of prednisone. It will take care of it.

Agree, hot water is instant relief. I've started going to the doctor now if Calamine doesnt improve it in a few days. Had a rough time a few years back with poison ivy on my leg, ended up infected from scratching and was an ugly experience to deal with. Since then I just go get a shot and prescription cream. Funny thing is all my life I never really had reactions, later in my life it seems I can't even walk near the stuff without problems.

The shots people keep talking about are steroids. They will work great.

If you know someone with topical steroid cream or solution that will work great too. You can buy mild topical steroids over the counter.

Just a reminder when dealing with Poison Oak, Ivy or Sumac if the plant looks dead you can still get catch it. The oil (urushiol) can remain active for years after the vine has died. AND do not burn the vines!!!!!

Having worked and played outside in the south all my life, I have endured PI many times.  The shot from the Doc works great and fast, but the real solution is prevention.  This past summer I worked in central Kentucky for over three months in PI up to my thighs every day.  Before starting the project I honestly expected to be hospitalized before finishing.  We started taking some oral meds before work began.  I was very doubtful due to the heavy coverage of the plant and the amount of time we would be exposed every day.  I never had a single outbreak of the terrible rash and itch I was accustomed to.  So without a doubt I can highly recommend taking a liquid product called ORAL IVY.  I have also used the pill named POISON IVY PILLS. Also TECHNU wash does a great job as a after exposure wash if used within an hour or so of exposure, I keep a giant bottle in my truck always.

Negative on the hot shower, it just spreads the oil. Technu for prevention and steroids once you've got it. Good luck.

Yes, the first time you bathe after exposure, hot water is bad.  It opens up the pores.  Cool shower with Technu soap or just dish washing liquid if you don't want to spend the money/have it on hand.

But no, once you wash the oils off, that's it for the P.I. "spreading."

Then it's all about releasing histamines.  Hot shower = good.

Since we are on the subject I am a big fan of using Simple Green (spraying it on) as a day of clean up remedy.

The best thing I have found is Burts Bees Poisin Ivy soap.  Dries it out really well.  Can be found online and I actually found it at Harris Teeter.

I have worked around it for years. I haven't gotten from weedeating and digging it up. But when I did the hot water thing was great only after the oils were cleaned off my skin. When you weedeat it you can see the oils flying through the air. I just step back and let it fall to the ground. The steroid thing seems to be the best.
