I'd rather walk/jog/run mountain bike trails, but would like to bike with my children on occasion. Just not often. I would rather do road rides or flat off road trails if I'm going to bike. I did the Anson county 30 mile road bike race on a mountain bike and it wasn't much fun. So, I'm thinking of going with the Trek Neko. From what I read though, people don't give it great reviews and seem to say it doesn't do trails or roads well. Does anyone have a Neko or have you ridden one? Any other multi-use bikes that you might suggest? I need a bike. I just can't figure out which will work.

What's your budget?  A nice hardtail 29er with the proper size tires can handle road rides and trails as long as you plan to settle in for the ride and enjoy it.....

Just my .02, but I've found that trying to find one bike to handle trail riding and road riding is not an easy task.  A lot of bikes will do both okay, but won't excel at either.   I know that it sounds simple, but realistically, the disciplines of road and mountain biking are very different.  Something you might want to consider would be to change tires on that mountain bike you rode for the Anson road race.  It wouldn't be a road bike, but a set of city slick tires are cheap and then you could put the original tires back on when you hit the trails with the kids.

I have reason to believe that the squirrels are mocking me.

Thanks FredRubble and gonzo for your input. I failed to include all the proper info. I'm female, just a little over 5'3" and budget, I'd like to keep it under $800 and would plan to own it for many many years. It would help if I'd just commit to something. I was hoping I could find a way to have it all. lol Realistically I'd probably ride the road more because I'm just more comfortable with that. My (teen to young adult) children are regular mountain bikers, but they'd be willing to dumb down their ride for me. The bike I rode in the Anson county race was my daughter's, a men's Trek bike, and way too big for me. I just made do and borrowed it because she was the only one not riding that day so her bike was free. I don't currently own a bike. My children are all quite a bit taller than I am. I like the idea of just switching out tires.

How "dumbed down" do you think the offroad rides w/ your kids would be?  If its pretty tame, how about a CX (cyclocross) bike?  Basically a road bike with "fat" tires with some mild knobbies.

See the market place........I've got a small 29'r basically new, and I live in Monroe if you wanna check it out. I have a road bike but I also have a 29'r hardtail with cross tire's that I ride on the road, actually I'm more comfortable on it than my road bike, if you need to hit the ditch no big deal.

That's what I'd get.... For what he's selling that for you could buy another set of wheels and just swap them out when you wanna ride road or trail.....
