I don't want to lose mountain bike access anywhere but would love to see logging banned in pisgah. I would even be willing to loose mountain bike access to limited areas to ensure that we don't lose swaths of forest in the future. I'm sure that's probably not a popular opinion around here .
The logging industry gets a bad rap but in some areas is critically needed.
Those massive west coast forest fires are the direct result of logging and land use bans.
Dead trees fall and create fuel for these fires, and lightning is not needed to start a fire, the rotting wood generates enough heat to start the fire.
Next a left out fact is the that after the loggers leave an area they have to replant it. This benefits the wildlife giving then new food sources and habitat.
While a newly cut area may be an eye sore it is only temporary, some trees have a growth rate of over a foot per year.
While our main focus is on trails to ride and most don't pay attention to what the gov. is doing till it affects the trails we ride, the gov. has been on a massive land grab for years. Out west they have been taking land and shortly afterwards classify it as limited use, after everyone get's over that they classify it again with more restrictions. We are seeing the first steps here with Pisgah, eventually it will become classified as wilderness, what the gov. wants the gov. takes!
