Lake loop is definitely the best "Intro to Mountain Biking" trail around. It is where my fiance started out 2-3 years ago. When that becomes easy, the best next step in my experience, is Lake Norman easy trails (Monbo / Norwood), Beatty green loop, and anything at Sherman.

Definitely don't push it though...

Also, NEVER offer unsolicited advice to an exhausted and frustrated significant other. Unless you enjoy spending the drive home in an uncomfortable, tension filled silence...

Oh I learned not to give her unsolicited advice after the first time out! Thankfully I was able to make her laugh on the way home but it took about 3mo to get her back on a bike.
I don't see her wanting to go much beyond Lake Loop or Sherman. I know she won't do any rooty trails like Fisher or N Meck. At this point I'd be thrilled for her to ride Lake Loop 1-2x!

Probably alittle too optimistic. After the refill, then tests and monitoring. I bet by Labor Day the latest.

What is the status of East Main starts and finishes?  There are currently two exits and two entrances, one each off the new service road and just past the toll booth.  With the new service road looking like its finished are there plans to re-route everything so it's continuous? Undecided

THe old  original Entrance by the parking lot down the hill, was kinda blocked off. Had to ride all over the over flow parking area and  cross the road to get to it. THe old entrance seem to work best to me. It just was easier to connect without all the gravel path time.

THey sure do move things around out there.

I kind of like the new entrance because it connects well with the Academy loop.

you have to cross the road, but you jump on the pea gravel trail and ride that around the bend and you are at the second entrance.

I'm indifferent as to which one is chosen, just frustrated with the lack on continuity.  I took a rest after riding by the old (pre-2016) entrance yesterday and watched riders coming from every which way.  The signage also points you to a dead end.  There used to be racers tape but that is gone too.

Its a 5.2 mile trail that they stopped building at 5.1...

I'd be glad to volunteer!

Last two times I rode East (in the last 2 weeks) I started at the original entrance, or what's left of it at least. Not sure if that is the right way to start it, but I see no reason to abandon that original beginning section of trail.

I ended in the same location I started. It is clear that the very last downhill part, that used to be followed up by the final rooty steep climb out to the end, is blocked off with logs.

I do think it is confusing. My vote (not that it really counts for much) is to keep the start/finish of East essentially in the same place it used to be, albeit with cleaner and more obvious signage. Though I can see how one might argue that having a trail head start and end on a gravel road which now sees regular car and bus traffic might not be the best idea...

I'm aware the entrance/exit of East is not clear, but there are more variables involved than just putting up a sign.

I'm in the process of developing a long term plan for how to connect the Parkway Path, East, and several other trailheads, but the plan is still a ways from implementation.  I do not intend to put a partial fix in place just to take it out and rebuild it again.

It seems you all know where the trail is.  Ride it from whichever entrance you prefer for the time being.

I can understand that. I would probably do the same thing in your shoes. There's nothing I hate more than having to do something twice because it wasn't done right the first time.

With all the work that has been done to add to East loop and build Academy, I have nothing but praise and thanks to give! Keep up the great work!

I don't mind the trail confusion. If I want to ride east it's not hard to get on the trail. My only major concern has been the ticks on academy. I got a pretty bad infection from a bite I got from a tick I picked up on academy trail.

You might ask how do I know it was from that section... well I'm not 100% sure but nearly every time I rode that section I was picking ticks off my body. When ever I skipped that section I had no such problems.

I like that section but I have since stopped using it, and no more ticks.

I have logged 800-1000 miles at WWC this so far this year. I love the system and appreciate all the work that is done there.

Lee - this is great news.  The fact that it's being recognized is good for me.  Thank you for the beauty of the WWC trail system!

Curious where on the academy trail do you think the problem lies?  Academy doesn't seem to be much different than the thread trail in terms of environment.

I don't know. I'm no insect specialist or am I aware of the types of places that ticks like to hang out. I just know when I stopped riding that section, I stopped removing ticks.

I'm there at least once a week. I still ride every other section of that trail system (including thread). Zero issues.

Ticks like tall grass areas, especially along natural trails where their hosts are likely to pass by and brush against the grass. Also, because that is generally where they drop off their previous hosts (deer and other animals are active trail users Wink ). There are a few of these areas on East and Academy that I can think of. They did get a little overgrown at one point this summer, but I believe they have all been cut back by now.

I have been riding East and Academy a lot this spring/summer, as well as all the Charlotte area trails. Been riding 2-3 times per week pretty consistently and I have found maybe 2 or 3 ticks on me so far this year. Not sure which trails I was riding when I found them. If you're going to be riding bikes in the woods, ticks are an inevitability. Just check yourself after every ride and you should find them before they have a chance to really latch on.
