Here's a nice quote from a WCNC article:
Two former Whitewater Center employees told NBC Charlotte that none of this surprises them. One of them said the water was dirty, and in fact, some workers got sick because of it. "We called it river rot," the unidentified former employee said, "It's where your foot gets wet and if you have cuts, they never heal and eventually gets infected from whatever."
As mtbchk mentioned, and now I've heard from a couple other sources, the filtration system required frequent maintenance and wasn't running all the time. USNWC leaders aren't talking to media. What they need is transparency and openness, not going into turtle mode.
I think this is the type of thing is their biggest worry. If they can show negligence (i.e. they didn't run the filtration system continually or as much as they should), that could mean they are outside the bounds of an insurance policy, requiring them to carry the finanncial burden. Just speculating, of course, but that could spell major trouble.
However, at the same time, I'm with the previous poster that said "I'm surprised this doesn't happen in the other bodies of water..." Lake Norman, for example, seems like a petri dish. In the summer, the water is literally hot in some spots, and ridiculously dirty. Just looking at it, it appears disgusting.
Anyway, I hope it all works out. I would hate to see WWC go out of business. It's one of the best attractions in Charlotte.
