Off-Road Assault on Mt. Mitchell - July 31st

Well, just pulled the trigger on this. Been looking forward to it for a while. Anyone else going?

What I'm curious about is tires, Any benefit to running more roadie/skinny tires than a 2.35 racing ralph up front?

Thinking about camping, hopefully the weather is nice... enough!

Depends on weather conditions and your style of riding.
I use Maxxis Icon's for everything except really wet and muddy conditions. The lighter tire will help of course on all the climbs and road sections (there are a lot) but then you risk damaging a tire on the Kitsuma and Heartbreak descents.
Best advice is to run what you have and are comfortable with and if possible preride some of the route.

Thanks, I'm pretty light on my bike and pretty good at taking care of my stuff, so I guess it really is just a coin flip!

Wish I could get up that way, sadly I won't.. Kind of bummed about that!

ikons like Santana have work well up there for me. The only issue with the Ralph I had was punctures, but I'm a 190lb anvil. I wouldn't buy new tires for the race, run your favorite. it's 75% pavement and gravel anyway.

Looks like they took out some of Old Route 70? Does that remove some of the trail?
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

From email: PLEASE NOTE: WE WILL NOT BE USING OLD 70 THIS YEAR AS IT IS STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION. WE WILL USE MILL CREEK RD. BOTH TIMES TOGETHER TO THE TOP OF KITSUMA TRAIL. THIS ADDS 2 MILES, MAKING THE RACE LENGTH 62 MILES. SINCE THIS IS AN ALTERNATE COURSE THERE WILL NOT AWARD FOR BREAKING THE COURSE RECORD.

So it sounds like it removes that one section of trail that is above Kitsuma? And just grind out on Mill Creek?

It only takes out that paved climbed at the start up to kits Uma. No trail lost, but does add a little mileage.

as a first timer to this race im confused, does it take out the lookout trail on this map?

based on the note from the email it sounds like you stay on mill creek road all the way to kitsuma instead of making that left on old 70?

The paved path up old 70 is currently closed.  You will take Mill Creek Rd twice to the Kistuma trail head.  Ignore the map, as it hasn't been updated from the normal course.

So that middle section on the map where mill creek road is on top, old 70 is in the middle, and kitsuma is on the bottom, is removed?

Yes.  Where the star is and arrow #1 heading to Point Lookout, that piece is gone.

You will go from the town to the star and then follow arrow #2.  Then you will take the left a few miles later to head over to Kitsuma.  The rest stays the same.

Where were you 8th? If it was on the kiosk or scrolling results, those are preliminary. We had a couple folks misrepresent some numbers as DNF when they actually kept racing after some mechanicals. We had a few updates after we posted the results. One racer rode under someone else's number, had to DQ him etc.

Your time of 6:20:54 was strong. We had a lot of folks that could not finish on Sunday. Great job!

Come race the Couch and Swank races in November Smiley

Ahhh gotcha, It was a pleasant surprise to see that I was bumped up a spot from 10 to 9!

I was very close to being one of those when I had a mental breakdown on Kitsuma, I must have lost 10 overall spots just in that 1 mile uphill on that trail!

Can you guys talk my wife into it? I will most likely have a 1 week old baby for the Couch/Swank... both events sound perfect to me too!
