I'm looking for an inexpensive cabin

My wife and I could use a little time getting out of town and would like to take out girls up to the mountains for a weekend, either  Nov 4th-6th or 10th-13th.
Exact location isn't terribly important as long as it's not in town.
It doesn't have to be fancy as long as it keeps us dry and somewhat warm.
My girls are 3 & 5, we would camp but it looks like it will be a little too cold for them to enjoy that.

We're on a budget so looking for something very reasonable.

Any help or leads would be appreciated.  And we have searched VRBO but cheap nightly rates are usually spoiled by steep cleaning fees.

If it's a personal/private cabin we will leave it at least as clean as we found it if not cleaner. And if there are some little things that need fixed, I can do that too.

Thanks for the help.

Dave

There's camping cabins at Black Forest near DuPont. Also Boone , Black Mountain, and Statesville have KOA' with kamping cabins. Outside of Brevard, there's this place called Adventure Village. They have these really nice cabins for $90 a night. They have a loft where the kids can sleep . And they have a small Kitchen and bathroom. That's my favorite place to rough it Smiley

I've used AirBnB in WNC and its great... you can get what you need and not what you dont. Most rental cabins are pricey and come with stuff you dont really need (hot tubs, etc.) if you are planning on spending your time away from the cabin.

We have used them as base camps and its a great way to get the down lo on local spots and cool places you wouldnt normally visit.

Thanks, black Forrest is shut down for the season but I gave Adventure Village a call and checking availability.

I haven't looked at AirBnB in this area, I'll give that a shot.
If you have records of any place you stayed Banjo I'd be interested to hear.

Ideally, we'd like to stay under $100 a night.

I have a cabin in Brevard that is available the weekend of the 10th.  I do offer a discount to the TB group.  Many on here have rented from me in the past.  This weekend is rented...  Link to craigs list..  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Thanks for the offer BikeMedic, we ended up booking a camping cabin at the adventure village place mentioned above for next weekend. I've seen you offer your cabin here before and hope eventually to try it out.

I always warn people before asking me for my opinion because I will tell you what I really think.  That said, here's my honest review of Adventure Village...

When we pulled up, we were surprised just how close it was to the main road, but once you're in the campground, I didn't notice any traffic.  Like any good marketing typically does, the photos made it look like you had a little more space in between the camping cabins then you actually do.  The cabins are stacked pretty close together.  That said, the people that were supposed to be in the cabin next to us, were never seen.  I really don't know if anyone actually stayed there or not other than a light being left on.
The inside of the cabin was just what we expected.  My wife was a little less than excited, but once she realized the kids loved the place for what it was, she lightened up.  My girls (3 & 5) had a ball in the loft where they also slept.  It was like a little play house for them to have all to themselves.
The kitchen is tiny, but much better than setting up camp stove on a picnic table.  So it was great to wake up, pull food out of the fridge and whip up some breakfast.  And having the ability to make coffee right there was nice too.
Like I said, the cabins are a little tight next to each other, but we had a little private area with our fire ring, right next to a babbling creek, which drowned out any potential noise and there was a good hillside to look at.
There is a nice sized fishing pond that we didn't test out, but my girls loved the deck walkways that led up the middle of the pond to a gazebo on a small island in the middle of the pond.  Then the decking continued to the other side of the pond where the pool is located.  The pool was closed obviously due to the season.  But there was also a play ground area where my girls played for a bit in between hikes.

I wonder what the crowds are like there in the summer time.  The fact that there's a stocked pond to fish in and a pool there to swim in, it seems like it could be a fun stop in the warmer months.

At the same time, there were clearly a lot of people staying there long term.  I'm not sure if they were just working in the area (as some were clearly construction workers) or just locals finding it a cheaper place to hole up.  They were all fine and didn't bother me, but made me wonder how many locals hang out there in the summer time.

Over all, it ended up being a great option for us, I appreciate the information and would have never found the place without the reference.  It was an affordable way to stay in the mountains, in a heated simple cabin that gave my kids a taste of camping without throwing them out into the national forest on their first experience.  We might come back if the weather is too cold to camp again.  We had a great time.

Oh, and it doesn't hurt that Oscar Blues is only about a 10 minute drive from the campsite!

Thanks for the lead Douglas!

Black forest has cabin right on top of each other also. I don't know why that is. During the warmer months, hotels in the area are $200+ so Adventure Village is where I go when available. I like Davidson campground, but they don't have cabins and during the summit. It seems every is right on top of you. They are constructing a new campground right off 276 Called Pilots Cove. Supposed to have cabins . The way it is described, it seems that the cabins may be on the pricey side. But it's supposed to be ultra modern. And there are no commercial campgrounds in the nation's forest. So I think it will be a good thing
