Suggestions for child seat on a Mountain Bike.

I'm looking for suggestions for a child seat on a mountain bike. After some research and advice I plan on purchasing a Motobecane 29er in the next week.

I have an 8 month old and want to attach a child seat at some point so I can ride with her on the Greenway. There seems to be mixed reviews on child seats and it appears many do not fit a lot of bikes. Looking for someone who may have experience with this and a recommendation on a good child seat. Would prefer a rear child seat on the bike.

Thanks for any advice.

I have a large Cannondale F2000 for sale right now with a Blackburn rack already on it.  This rack works with Blackburn child seats.  This setup worked great for both of my kids riding on the back.  Also, this frame has extra bosses specifically for mounting a rack to it.

Check it out here...

I've done the rack mounted seat and a trailer.  Trailers are considered a lot safer but I like the convenience of the seat.  Get a good rack (like a blackburn)
and make sure your bike has the mounts.   Below is what I use.  BTW, the American Pediatrics Association does not recommend children under 1 to ride on bikes--in Europe its common.  I found my child at 9 months did not have the head control to endure the bounciness of the ride.  Also, finding a helmet that fits may be difficult.

I agree with Nuke on the age of the wee ones.  Especially with regards to neck strength and helmet sizes.  One tip to add, even with the kids old enough to ride... They would often fall asleep back there.  I use to roll a towel up and put it over their head (centered) to fill up the void on both sides of their nugget and the sides of the kids seat.  This helped keep the lateral movement to a minimum if they were catching some zzzzzzz's.

Thanks for the response and the information. This is probably a stupid question but how do I make sure the bike I'm going to buy has the mounts on it for a rack?

Also to add to this post. Does anyone have a recommendation for a MB that is a solid bike and is know for/good for attaching a child seat? I really don't want to buy a new MB and not be able to attach a child seat to it.

Thanks

Again... the bike I have for sale right now DOES have a frame with the bottom mounting hole for a rack and there is a rack included that will accept a Blackburn child seat... I used one with this same bike.

See the 3rd photo on the Craigslist ad to see what I'm talking about (the panniers are removed in this photo).  Look for a bolt connecting the bottom rack stay through the frame just behind the rear axle.  The two connections up top are flexible brackets that mount to the frame just below the seat post collar.  I used electrical tape on the frame at these locations to prevent any issues with the paint.

Generally speaking the only type of bikes that are going to have special mounting locations (either welded on bosses or through holes on the frame) are going to be touring and commuter bikes.  There are exceptions and I guess my F2000 is one.  Also there are racks that use the rear axle as a mounting point so you don't need a special mounting area of the frame to connect.

If you want, I can e-mail you a few detailed photos?  If so PM me your e-mail address.

I hope this provides some clarity?
