Well, I am sad to say that it looks like Sugar Island has finally bit the dust.  I rode from the Adventure Rd parking lot yesterday & after the trail splits to the left off Tunnel Trail to head toward Sugar Island the way is completely blocked by trees placed on the main corridor after the bridge going over to the school side at the top of the hill & there's a No Trespassing sign nailed to a tree.

Sugar Island will be missed.

Anyone know when the new section off Prairie Loop is slated to open?

Sad But True

Losing a trail is akin to losing an old friend who's always been there for you thru thick & thin.  The trail never asks questions or offers any condolences...it just takes what you give it & asks for more.  But...such is life.  All good things must come to an end & Sugar Island definitely qualified as a Good Thing.  So long old friend...you will be remembered frequently & fondly.

School Loop East plus Sugar was a true single track grinder kinda trail.  Hate to see it go for real.

I wonder how this might affect the trails and all the works they've been doing over there? It says the trails will still be accessible, so I hope that accurate. Somehow this all ties into the closure of Sugar. Anyone know who owns the land that Sugar is on? Its right next to the school, does the Town of FT Mill own it?

The closure of Sugar has/was known for quite a while. The town land development map had it being turned into housing for years. The other day at Springs they had a rather large meeting with a major local company (I don't know if they want the name out so I will not say who it is not part of the released news story) and from the take away I got was they were or are going to be involved with trail development.

I got an email from Anne Springs Greenway today  and they announced that Anne Springs, the Fort Mill School District and the YMCA were going to work together to upgrade, build and maintain a new Aquatics Center on the property. No mention in the email about any trail work improvements.

There is a lot more than just a new frog pond going in, there will be many more announcements coming.

Trails don’t generate the same amount of revenue other more commonly used facilities do.

And so the proclamation was declared, no lands shall be spared by the noble quest of the peculiar gaggles of Fort Millionaires to continue to shun the modest homes of the Queendom and Exodus both family and feline to the promised land of tree-less, planned communities, traffic as far as the eye can see, crowded community pools and unsightly homes on tiny lots.  Go forth and pack thine oversized SUV's with all goods needed for safe passage of the long and trying journey down I77 or 521 to the land of unchecked growth and fountains of youths.

I just want a local place to ride. They have built new trail and were planning more, so hopefully that isn't all at risk now.

I loved Sugar/School east, it was more primitive than a lot of trails around, which I like.

I received the same e-mail yesterday as FM Willy & I responded inquiring if the mtn bike trails will be affected by this new development but have not yet received a response.

This is the best!

God that place sucks now!... When I was a youngster you could drive from Waxhaw to Pineville on 521 and see cows and farms the whole way. Now its unsightly sprawl for Charlotteans fleeing property taxes and looking for that "country living" HA!

Wont be long until Lancaster is absorbed and families get forced out like they have in Indian Land.

Get out while you can!!! Shocked

I rcvd a response from ASG stating the trails will remain unaffected by the pending development & that the new trails should open before years end.

They're working on the new trail off Prairie loop now.. Will be about 2.5 miles added to Prairie and the jeep roads for most part will be gone.

When it's done, everything except Tunnel will be directional switching direction bi-yearly.

I could tell you where the new trail is and a couple of rumors I heard about additional trail, but I'm sworn to secrecy.  Cool

Last time I was out there it was open..

And everybody's been riding it..

I heard from a couple of regulars from across the street they were trying to keep everybody off of it until it got packed down sufficiently.

IMO, it's good to go.

Also, there's no signage, so I think they're trying to sort it out and designate exactly what's the mountain bike trail. Easy to just keep riding, and riding and riding.  Smiley
