There is more mileage at ASG now than since the 3 Kings section under the train trestle was changed to hiking only > 10 yrs ago.  The loss of Sugar Island will be a difficult pill to swallow, for sure, as it's the jewel of the entire trail system & some of the finest 3 miles of single-track around.   I plan to continue riding it til the bull dozers show up!   Cheesy

It is 3+ miles without a single root. Nice flow, but as others have said, does not replace Sugar Loop.

Just to drag this out, there are two school loops... east and west. The east school loop is the other side of the highway. Are we losing that and Sugar loop?

From what it sounds like, SCHOOL LOOP EAST (near the bridge) and SUGAR LOOP.

Give or take from screenshot below.

This is my best guess of what we are losing with the lost of Sugar.  I believe just before the suspension bridge that leads to the school there is a trail that leads back to the other tunnel on the school loop.

If you look at the maps being shown here, the development will most likely be between the QT and the school. Its going to take away the entrance to Sugar and the school loop east. I don't see that as being a housing development, but who knows, maybe they'll jam another 300 homes into a tiny spot. Most likley (or probably wishful thinking) its a business where the lots goes back a few hundred yards (Like the QT, food lion, or the small strip mall they just finished on 160). Some of Sugar runs way back towards the creek, whatever goes in there would have to be huge if its going to go all the way back that way. My point: maybe some of sugar will remain after the development is done, whether you can access it is another story. Perhaps from the school loop down by the bridge overpass ? Maybe as an out an back? It won't be maintained by ASCG or the land owner.

If anyone figures out a way to ride it all that makes sense, please post it here.

It is weird to have two one way trails heading the same direction.  I can't figure out how to ride it without back tracking.

Image below is what I rode over the weekend. I didn't ride Prairie Loop this time. Turned around at the bridge right before.

START > School Loop West  (until...) > The New Addition > Sugar Loop > School Loop East > FINISH

NOTE:  The New Addition appears to be one way for bikers (per the signs) while all the other trails being either way so the order of riding is up to you.

Here's what I did the other day, starting from the ball fields:

CCW on Sugar
CW on school east
CCW on school west
Over to prairie and around that
Up the new trail to the lot

It gets about everything. It's a serpentine route

RIP to springs.  The access from the complex got torn up today.  Might still be able to get to it from the backside if they haven't blocked it off yet.

And first time riding the new trails today, well I guess they are living up to the greenway name.  I used to be proud to say I completed a full loop there on a rigid.

It will be a nice alternative, but never the same.

Also just a heads up, someone is going through and changing sign directions.  Apparently it was fixed this monring and changed by the time I got there at 1:30.

Access to Sugar you mean?  I assume overall trail access from there is not gone?

In any  case, you can still use the access near the strawberry fields I'm sure.

So to clarify...

As you start at the complex you can only make it about a 1/10th of a mile down east towards Sugar before it has been bulldozed.

Sugar might still be in tact, and rideable if you access from the backside, but it won't be there for long if it is.

Can you clarify where they started bulldozing? by the manned kiosk? by the tunnel before Sugar? somewhere else?

When you start at the kiosk and turn right on east, heading towards East/Sugar.  You can only make it about 100 yards before they have started bulldozing and the trail is roped off.

Again this is about 100 yards down from the kiosk on the right.  So sugar is probably still there, however no more access from the complex.  You might be able to get to it from the back side, and ride the loop and take east back down towards praire.  But for now this is what we got.

On a side note, I have got to ditch photobucket.  That photo was edited and still displays as original.

Anne Springs is building a parking lot access road from the lot near the ball fields over to Springfield parkway. It runs right across the old trail that ran down to the tunnel you go through to enter Sugar and School West, basically cutting it off.

You can see the cut through from Springfield Parkway (Rte 460)

Now, Sugar is on the other side of Springfield and theres no new stuff there yet, so you should be able to link it up from the other side. I am not sure about that though.

When its done, the lot entrance will allow people to come and go from Springfield OR 160

Damn Damn Damn!

The only way ASG can make up for the loss of Sugar Island is by bringing back the 3 Kings section beyond the train trestle.  The new Paradise Loop is nice-n-all & I'm very appreciative of it but it doesn't hold a candle to Sugar.  This is a huge loss to the local community.

So Anne Springs is taking away access to Sugar (from the complex) even before whatever development is replacing Sugar?  Is traffic at the complex that bad that you need access from both 460 and 160?  I've never been there during high traffic times so maybe it truly is an issue.

I have to agree with others here, while the new stuff is nice, it seems they are overdoing it and completely changing the character of the trails.  I hate to see this change as it's my go-to trail due to location.  I know Sugar was going away either way but for the past month or two, it has been a nice balance between new trails and Sugar/East.

Floored by the pics above. Have been following the postings and knew it was going to happen but thought I had more time to ride sugar before it &^&^ the bed. New trail is nice but lacks the character of what we are losing. ASG is really close to work for me but losing both East and Sugar has me really questioning if it's worth $5 / trip. Understand the reality of the borrowed land issue but I think I'm going to be looking for an alternative venue for quick after work rides. Anybody ride Baxter / Rock-Vegas and have an opinion?

I live in Rock Thrill & ride Riverwalk fairly often...it's a great little trail, although the developers took the best section last year.  I've only been to Baxter once about 6 years ago.  I remember a lot of climbing.
