Josh(Justin) thank you for the flippant immature comments.
It's been a few weeks since I have ridden the Springs and I appreciate the work they have done. I just want to know if they plan on adding any additional miles? Does anyone know?

they weren't blocked on Sunday.

There were lots of runners and bikers (including myself) on both School Loop East and Sugar Loop trails this past Saturday though their homepage said trails will be permanently closed on June 30th. Now the website says "School Loop East, Sugar Loop and the Complex Tunnel have been permanently closed. New trails include Paradise Loop, Avery Loop and Tunnel Trail."

Anyone know if they completed blocked Sugar and East School to where you can't find a way thru?

Found a news article on their website about the new trails:

Yes, they are adding more trails. They are in the planning stage now and I heard that construction will begin soon.

The new trail is fine, like when your wife tells you she's fine, or it's fine.  It's fine like that (not really fine).  It really is the truest mountain biking related juxtaposition of Fort Mill to Charlotte.  Take something cool, move it to SC and water it down for families and Fort Millionaires.  If you appreciate the endless true single track in Charlotte, the all-but-paved Paradise loop at ASCG is probably not for you.  A MTB trail without roots is like a yard without trees.  Welcome to Fort Mill.

Are you connected to anyone at ASC?  Are they seeking input from outsiders on trail design?  At first, I thought the new trails were a welcomed addition to ASC - mixture of rooty/technical (old School Loop East/West and Sugar) and new smooth/fast/flowy.  Had Sugar/School East remained, it would have been a nice balance of trail types.

They've now smoothed out School West (renamed the trail) and smoothed out Prairie including removing some of the fun sections of that trail too.

I know they will never please all and I haven't run the trails there but I imagine even trail runners may not like what it's become.  I have an annual membership because it was purchased early in the season and it's close to home so I'll still ride there occasionally, but it no longer seems like a place to go ride for more than an hour at a time.

In the article above ( (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)), they do mention about building more trails. That's about the extent of it though.

Funny! I do think the new Paradise loops is better than no trail and it's hard to instantly replace an established trail like Sugar (which also was pretty tame honestly). Anyway the new loop seems good for beginners. It reminds me of a lot of the trails up at LNSP.

So if they tore down the check in hut where can you get onto the trail by there? I'm talking by the baseball fields and the rec center?

You still enter the trail at the same spot.  There are signs for Blue Star hiking trail and the bike trails (directional sign).

I rode ASC for the first time today. sadly I never got to ride the trails that you can no longer access, but I had a great time on Paradise. Fast and flows well. Did 14+ miles all in all. Ended up getting a membership on the way out. I will be back often now that I've moved and it's one of the closest trails to me.

Not connected with Springs, just a rider that lives close by. I miss east and school just like everyone, and hate that the technical parts of the trail system are now gone. The only challenging part now is the small rock garden... anyway, I was told by one of the check in attendants that more trails are in the plans, heck I wish they would open up the other side of 21 to bikes.
So if you want a super fast short 9 mile lap ride springs, it's a nice option for a recovery ride or a family day in the woods.

Roll Eyes

Yeah, I agree.
Not enough roots, ruts and errosion at Springs now. Not worth the trip.  Smiley

Anybody know the total combined mileage at this point;

Paradise loop
Avery loop
Tunnel trail
Prairie loop

I get about 8.6 mi from the rec center & back.  Maybe the new trail will be less sanitized than Paradise/Avery loops.  Gonna really miss Sugar!

It's not a matter of being sanitized. That's just the local terrain and soil composition.
It's a matter of trail erosion.
You like rutted, rooted and eroded trails? You're going to have to give it time. Time for the soil to wash away.
The other option is to create man made obstacles and speed bumps, or ride an older trail.
There's no conspiracy. That's trail building 101.

This^

The trail is brand new, its not going to stay the way it is forever. Over time the dirt will wash away, the roots will begin to show up, the foliage on the side of the trail will begin to grow in,  the trail will develop more character.

You can't just build new trail, particularly in a fast period of time, that is going to be like Sugar.

I have to say I pretty much disagree with sentiment this thread is heading.  Paradise is already starting to get more fun and sketchy with erosion and some tight switch backs over loose rock.  I find it to be a very fun section.  Sugar is nice and I do like roots as much as the next guy, but sugar is not more fun than paradise.  More challenging, yes.  More prototypical of trail riding, perhaps.  Flowier, no. Overall, this trail is in better shape than it was 3 years ago when it was completely neglected.

I agree completely in terms of the need to build durable, self-sustaining trails & you are right, Paradise Loop is really fun to ride as it allows for much faster speeds due to it's design, which is top-notch & I'm extremely appreciative that we get to ride there at all.  I'm riding there today, as a matter of fact.  All I'm saying is Sugar had a lot more character to it in terms of it's level of difficulty (i.e. climbing & narrow corridor) in comparison to the rest of the trail & it will be sorely missed.  I guess since I've been riding Ft. Mill for > 20 years change is difficult to accept, but ASG has been all about change since they 1st banned bikes from the train trestle/dairy barn side of the property.  If it's roots & erosion you want then head on over to the Marion Deihl (sp?) side of the Back Yard!  I hit it yesterday for the 1st time in over a year & was pleasantly challenged by the oldest trail in town!  Jack Crouch has done a Great Job with the new re-route...thanks Jack!

+1 for citing MD side.  A tooth-grindingly awesome trail.

Side note, the underpass beneath Tyvola is under construction so you can go between MD and Farmbrook sides without the sketchy Tyvola crossing.

Plenty of challenging spots still at Springs.

Now, parts of it remind me of Sherman. Yep, that's what we'll call it..
Sherman, south cakalaki version.

But if you want a real challenge, you could do some laps on the toilet bowl.. Our version of the roller coaster. We aint got time for no kindergarten bs....

Ignore the 'danger, no trespassing' sign. Make sure you get a little air time when you go off the top, and no need to scratch your crack halfway through your ride. Your rear tire will do that for you..
And make sure you bring a buddy.  Smiley
