Pro of a wider handlebar

I was talking to a friend in Italy and was showing him some bike models I like.  A part from the weight ( we all want the feather weight bike) he ended the conversation with: you want a wider handlebar, I didn't got his reply yet so I am asking you, why wider is better? We all go back to physics?

It does give better control, but the bars also need to fit you.  Too wide and it can be uncomfortable.  I have never liked a bar wider than 720mm but I am fairly short-armed.

That means you suggest it as well as an upgrade

as someone who recently went from 480mm drop bars to 90's narrow XC bars to 700mm DH bars, you do definitely feel more in control at slower speeds. But the main thing that changed is that I could space out my shifters from the breaks more which, to someone with larger hands, feels better.

Although I have hit a couple of trees last time out at Sherman with the wide bars, takes a bit of getting used to.

Honestly though, your size might be the most important factor in bar size IMHO. Going to a shorter stem makes a much more immediately noticeable difference(shorter as in going from 140 to 40 not 50 to 40)

Take that with a pinch or two of salt though  Roll Eyes

The biggest benefit I have felt from wider bars is additional leverage into the bike in turns.  When I am leaning the bike and putting weight into the edge knobs from the top the wider bars give me more leverage to keep the edge knobs pushed into the trail surface.  I agree with other posters though, there is definitely too wide, I'm at 5 9 with 760mm bars and feel comfy.
