Biggest thing I would say is non wicking; if they are wicking material then go for it all day long... if you don't wanna wear padded shorts / undies go for polyester undies.

On a side note; the compression of the lycra really helped me; by all means wear them under basketball shorts; or don't - I don't care what other people wear (unless its blue jeans with the drive side rolled up... just no...)

Uh?  What does "drive side rolled up" mean?

pant rolled up so you don't get them caught in the chain ring. They sell straps for it also, or a rubber band would work. Or maybe tie a bandanna. You get the picture. or be really cool ,and get Levi commuter jeans. They resemble the skinny jeans all the young folk wear

That total makes sense now.  I have ridden some in years past with cargo pants, and the baggy leg was prone to getting caught up in the chain.  I added a snap to the cuff so that the leg could be held tight to my leg, and this was sufficient.  Wearing pants was still not ideal despite being warmer on cold days.  I eventually abandoned that and only ever wear shorts now.

No protection, no abrasion resistance, no wicking, looks stupid, to loose catching on seat as you move on the bike, falls down, and did i mention looks stupid. Keep them off the trails and on the basketball court.

That said, that my opinion. Which isn't worth much. I just don't see the point in wearing shorts which don't actually provide any benefit other than covering your ass and junk.

Folks who refuse to wear bike specific clothing, should at the least get a Brooks B-17 saddle
