Is the Ardent front or rear specific?

Nope. Works great on both.

I ran 2.4's front and back on my hardtail and they were great!

Nope. Works equally terrible on both.

Never understood all the hate for Ardents.  Been running 2.4's front and rear on my Nomad for a few months and haven't had any issues.  Rolls well on local trails and have beaten the crap out of them in Pisgah.  Never once worried about them and I ride them harder than most.  To each their own.

I recently slapped Ardent 2.4s on front and back also, replacing the stock Bontranger XR3 Expert 2.3s.  I like them quite a bit. The Bontrangers seemed to be a bit unpredictable in the twisties.  They would seem to be gripping and then poof, they'd just give up and let go.  I find the Ardents to be much more predictable and less willing to give up their grip, not that I am a world class rider who takes my bike to its absolute limits.

Indeed. To each their own!

I just put one on the front of my rigid SS and felt like a monster truck, in a good way. High teens for pressure and it was hooking up good. it's heavy, but if you're grabbing a 2.4 tire you aren't concerned with weight, you just want dat volume.

I recently asked Maxxis about rim width for the Ardent.  I'm going from memory, but believe they said it was designed around a 19mm internal rim width.  Mine are on a 21mm internal wheel and the profile is pretty nice.  I'd imagine that running them on anything wider than 26mm or so would cause them to be too squared-off, making them a little more unpredictable in turns.  That may be where some of the hate comes from, but who knows.

Like I said, I've ridden them on the local trails and they roll great.  I've also had them on black diamonds out in Pisgah and have no complaints so far.

+1

I've got 2.4 Ardents on the front of my two rigid SS and love the tire.

For my use and skill level around our local trails, it's been awesome.

For reference, I'm running a Minion SS 2.3 in the back on both. This pairing works well for me currently.
