Many, many, many thanks to Mark for stopping to help me get some of the tree cleared that's blocking the lake loop.  It's a damn big red oak tree and it took about three others down with it.  We managed to get all off the smaller stuff cleared away and got a good chunk of the main tree cleared before he needed to head on and we were both simply whipped.  I will get back out again sometime this week to get the rest of it unless someone else wants to tackle it.  There's still a fair bit of cutting to do to get this one safely clear of the trail.

David, I know how that feels!! I had messes like that at LNSP and NM before. Back in 2007 when the bridge washed out at NM, I had a large oak that blew down and it took 4 other trees with it. That oak was so large, I had to put my 24" bar and chain on my Husky and it still would not go all the way thru that tree. A storm went thru LNSP one weekend and I worked 5 hours Monday clearing trees. You guys be careful with the trees!

Lake loop is now clear.  My chainsaw said it needs a vacation so I'd appreciate if Mother Nature wouldn't drop any more trees for a while.

Every time I see these pictures of red oaks on the ground I start wondering how much a small portable saw mill would cost .......  Just a big old pile of flooring waiting to be varnished from my twisted perspective.  Smiley

I always wonder about what exactly was happening at the moment that it fell and what are the chances that one will fall on me one day.  Shocked Undecided

And thanks!! For all the great work out there.

Our doubts are traitors and make us lose the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt.

It looks like some good firewood to me. Of course, I have plenty of wood.

Emily, I always wondered what would happen to a rider with ear buds in their ears when riding? Would they hear a tree starting to fall or would it fall on them? I guess it's a chance we take when riding in the woods!!

Sounds like a new take on the old philosophical question... "if a tree falls in the woods"...  Anyway thanks to those who keep trails rideable and philosophical questions coming on rainy days.

Or did the question have something to do with what a bear does in the woods?

Speaking of ear buds, while cutting up one of these trees I had a guy come up behind me while I'm running the chainsaw and yell "watch out!"  Maybe he couldn't hear my chainsaw since he had earbuds in, I don't know, but I'm pretty sure coming up behind a man with a running chainsaw and yelling to him is not the smartest idea.

I trimmed the low hanging fruit, aka face slappers, along the worst sections of the Main Loop and also the Roller Coaster Loop tonight.  I'll try to get out there and hit the rest of Main and Lake Loops soon.  We'll want to get out there w/a brush cutter soon, as the weeds/grass are crowding the trail in some of the open stretches and along the fire road.
