Full carbon saddle vs. F-150 torture test

Some of you might remember the carbon handlebar/F-150 torture test I did a while back. The carbon handlebar passed with flying colors. This time it's a full carbon saddle. This saddle is a Chinese brand, relatively easy to find and costs about $30.

First I tested it on my hard tail. I torqued the rails in a standard seat clamp that clamps top and bottom at about 12nm. It held up fine. Although very firm/slick and ridiculously lightweight, I didn't notice any durability issues or unusual noises.

Ok, onto the real test.

Ford F-150 (weight 5000 lbs.)

As I eased the front tire onto the saddle I heard a crunching noise. I let it sit for about 15 seconds. The saddle disappeared under the tire flat as a pancake.

As I rolled off of it things didn't look too bad. Except for a few tire marks, the seating surface looked completely intact and practically undamaged.

But of course I was curious about the rails. They didn't fair so well. One was completely snapped, the other was hanging on by a thread. And the front where the rails integrate into the saddle body was completely detached.

Moving the broken rails slightly, the entire rail structure separated from the saddle body.

Fail. Smiley

I had the same thing happen with a high end saddle (Selle Italia Kit Carbonio) riding up Mount Olive on my road bike with only my semi-fat 175 lb a@@ applying the pressure.  It was only about a year old w/about 2500 miles on it.  Carbon rail broke and then separated out of the front rail mount slot.  Needless to say, the rest of that ride was conducted very gingerly.   Huh  I loved the saddle, but will not do carbon rails ever again unless there is a huge leap in durability engineered into them in future generations.  I replaced it with a titanium rail model.  Its just as comfy, almost as light, and seems like it will last much longer (knock on wood).

Yep, if engineered and manufactured properly, carbon's a great material for frames, handlebars, seat posts, etc..

Seat post rails?

Not in my opinion.

Considering the small size of these parts, there's just not enough material involved considering the constant punishment seat rails endure.

Stay tuned.
I've got a standard seat laying around. I'm going to do the same experiment with Cr-mo rails soon for comparison purposes.
