Yep, fascinating and somewhat rare group photo of Marines during combat operations on an island in the Pacific during WW2. These guys are the real deal. No bs TV shows or Hollywood movies. Here's the colorized version.

'Men of the US 3rd Marine Raider Battalion, gathered in front of a Japanese dugout they helped to take at Cape Torokina on Bougainville in the Solomon Islands in January 1944.'

Interesting to note they seemed to be armed with a mix of M1 Garands, vintage bolt action Springfields. And a couple of guys have M1 carbines. I think the guy in the foreground is carrying bazooka rocket tubes on top of his backpack.

Here's some reading about the landings at Cape Torokina.
