Is there room in the Trailblazers for old guys?

I've been MTBing in Southern California for 17 years, but now that I have turned 60, I'm finding that I've gotten slower and less graceful.  We are planning to move somewhere near our kids, who live in Matthews, this summer.  It looks like your area is a great place to ride and I'm looking forward riding some of the trails.  My concern is this: Are there slower, older guys in your club?  Or, would I be the token geezer? Smiley

Charlotte is a great place to live-although it sounds like you've already made your decision to move so you don't need the nudge.
You'll find there are folks of all ages and tempos on the trails and its not hard to meet people as many folks have relocated here in the last 10 years or so.
This forum is sort of quiet these days so don't use here as a gauge of "who's out there".
The weather was awesome today and I'd guess many of the local trails had 100's of riders for the day on them so you'll have no trouble finding guys that ride like you.
With the lower cost of living you can treat yourself to a new bike when you get here Grin

Heck yeah, there’s room for everybody in our club. Our treasurer Mark Sullivan just had his birthday, and I’m pretty sure he gets free coffee at Wendy’s now.  Wink

Lots of trail choices near Matthews, too. Francis Beatty is 6+ miles of rooty old school singletrack. Ballantyne is a couple miles of fast, flowy trail with more mileage on the way. Purser Hulsey has 1.5 miles with more being built.

Come on.  Plenty of room and lots of trails and "seniors".  I'm 65 myself and ride WWC primarily because its close.  Lots of other options, harder and easier.  You won't be the fastest or the slowest I assure you.

Thanks, chris.  I'll look you up when I'm an official North Carolinian.   Yeah, SoCal is mostly dry grass, no water, dust, rattlesnakes and cactus where I ride.  NC is much more beautiful.

You can take my place in the Trailblazer's club. I moved to WV 2 years ago, but miss NC. I lived in Monterrey, Ca. back in 1974 and loved it except for the earthquakes. I'll be 68 years young in April and still love riding as much as I can. You'll love the Charlotte area for riding and the people, but the traffic is not too good.

I'll be 60 in May, and I'm slower then slow. I'm so slow, even the slow guys don't want to ride with me. But I enjoy riding in Pisgah. May take a little while to hike to the top, but I can bomb down with the best of them. Mark Sullivan just turned 49, so he has a little ways to go, Bigbikemike is one of those crazy lift served downhillers, so you would never guess he's as old as he says he is. And full face covers a lot of the wrinkles Wink

You will be surprised how many 55+ riders are out on the trails around here. There are so many trails available within the Charlotte metro area your head will spin. This Bike club is a great place to start. My only suggestion is when its humid and hot bring lots of water and try to start earlier in the day.

I turned 60 last year and a herniated disc a few years back left me with permanent partial numbness in my lower left leg/foot.  I am so slow that sometimes the dog walkers pass me on the climbs.  I did manage a once in a lifetime 1hr 3min on the Sherman Branch three last year though. Based on how I felt afterwards, I doubt I will attempt that again and have settled comfortably back in to my typical 1hr 12ish this year.

Glad there are some other Tarheel Trailgeezers around!

Shoot, back when I moved here . I used to do the whole Itusi trail system almost every day. But at that time only the Hawk, Hicks Creek and Norwood Loops existed. Monbo was added a year later. But riding the whole trail was my claim to fame

Just turned 49 and been riding locally since I was 26.  Seen a lot of changes and growth in the trails over the past 23 years!  The club and these trails are in the best shape they've ever been!!

Sure!  I surf here in California several times a week, and when conditions are good, I surf most every day before work.  I currently ride MTB only once in a while.  When we move out there, I will flip that around.  Hope to ride several times a week and will only get to surf once in a while due to the distance.  Let's stay in touch.

56 here.

All around, I'm a better man now than I was 20 years ago.
