I prepare my gelpack with organic maple syrup. It's a sugar boost with a lot of good minerals.

Nothing.

For me, I just never saw the utility of carrying unnecessary things on suburban trails.

I drink enough black coffee and green tea every morning to fill up a camelbak or two. So, I'm looking for a place to pee, not more to drink.  Smiley

If you see a bottle on my bike, most of the time it's empty.

My moms from west Texas.

You've got to be a little crazy to live out there. That place is hot, dry as a bone and everything smells like motor oil.

My dad always claimed I got too much of that.   Cool

I like you dont do liquid on the bike
Unless its super Hot out and going 10or more miles away from  civilization

My last ride drank a gallon of liquid in the AM for an afternoon ride and
Yup pee stops happened

Nothing like bombing down a hill and you gotta take  a pi  . ....  UGH !!😝

Gonna re-think liquid plans 🤔

I have tried the " Hammer gels "

I do like them - they def. give you the energy !

Is your mom from the Permian Basin? The area around Midland-Odessa. The creosote bush gives off that smell.
Panhandle myself. Hot dry summer, and smells like feed lots or hog farms these days.

She went to High School in the 50's in Spur, and lived around the Midland/Odessa area for some time.

Her father was in the oil industry, managed drilling crews for while, then bought a truck. Guess at the time hauling drilling equipment around was the better money. So, they moved around a lot. In those days, outside of town, it was nothing but trailers and trailer parks.

Later in life, grandma lived in Levelland, outside of Lubbock and used to run a cross roads restaurant called the Spot. Of course the chicken fried steak was delightful.

My mother ended up going to work for American airlines when she was 20, met some clown from South Carolina in the Air Force stationed at Reece Air Force base in Lubbock. The rest is history.

As the story goes, he told her his father was big in textiles. Oh yeah, he was a printer at the Bleachery in Rock Hill.  Grin

Although, they sent me out there occasionally in my youth. To me growing up in Atlanta and Charlotte, it was sort of like visiting a different world. The 70's were cowboys and dances/rodeos every Saturday night. I was enamored with the place.   Smiley
Although I went through there a few times in the 90's, I haven't been back in a while. I'm sure it's changed a lot. The coffee and water in Pecos has to be the worst ever.

Bush,
Your timing is excellent. In Austin at the moment and with all the BBQ and Tex-Mex hadn’t even thought about chicken fried steak. Had Texas in my sales district abut 15 years ago and really loved it. Think my favorite for chicken fried steak was a little joint outside Abilene my distributor used to take me to. Basically a heart attack on a plate but at least you were going to die with a smile on your face. May have to see what I can hunt up for dinner tomorrow night.....
Cheers,
Jeff

Man, I miss the Tex-mex food.

And the crazy ass birds in Austin.  Smiley

I'll tell you a quick story you can probably relate too in regards to the food.
In '84 my grandfather passed away from old age. My mothers sister lived in San Antonio and was married to a guy that owned an auto body shop. He had two High School aged teenagers from a prior marriage. I think I was about 23 at the time and fresh out of the Marines.

My mother and I flew into San Antonio airport and they picked us up and took us to their house for the night. The next morning we were heading to Goldthwaite for the funeral. It's a little ways outside of Waco.

We hadn't had anything to eat and I was hungry. When we got to their house, they had steak fajitas in a cast iron frying pan. I still remember his smokin' hot half latina 15 year daughter fixing those fajitas for me. Best fajitas I ever stuck in my mouth. The steak literally melted in your mouth. And the salsa? Home made and delectable of course.

I didn't stop thinking about that girl for six months.   Cool

Yes Bush your response paints a spot on picture of life in West Texas. I've eaten a meal at the Spot. I was in Amarillo for the first 50 years. (less a couple sojurns elsewhere). Had a few trips into the Permian Basin. Can't remember anything pleseant about the drive. Wind dust and oil patch trucks. Went to a place aptly named NoTrees for an MS MTB event t that was put on by the Midland MS Society. It was foggy early on and when we got to the site the greasewood aroma was refeshing.  Saw a young Jeff Lenowsky put on quite a show.
You forgot to mention how big High School Football is there. Several colleges would be jealous of the Odessa Stadium.
Go back nearly every year for an MTB event in Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Lots of fun and great trails. But on the agenda is plenty of Tex Mex, a couple of chicken fried steaks, and a What-a-Burger, green chili cheeseburger. And of course some good old West Texas Brisket. Ride lots of miles and work like a dog with the event and still gain weight.
I keep thinking of the song "Levelland" by James McMurtry. It paints a picture.
I won't go back but I miss it at the same time. That West Texas area used to be where a handshake was as good as a contract.
Almost forgot the pecan pie.

Yeah, I don't know when she sold the 'Spot'.
But it had to be a good while back.

I've eaten in Amarillo at the Big Texan on a couple of occasions.
Never ate for free.   Smiley

It's tough country out there, no doubt. It always seemed to me to be a simpler place compared to all the problems in the big cities to the east.

Never heard that one..

But historically speaking, west Texas is a rough place where the weak don't do too well.

Let's just say that in west Texas, the women are tougher than many of the men here.
