A little rant about the Concord City Trail...
04/19/20 at 4:50pm
Print Post
So I know its not officially open but Matt suggested trying it out a while back in order to “get some wheels on the ground” and burn the trailbed in. Fast-forward to this week and Ive ridden it a couple times. So here’s my shout out to Matt and his crew of gnomes that have been logging the hours creating this thing: IT IS WONDERFUL!

I recall beginning my mtb experience riding Beech Spring and Catawba - each had its unique character. We have so many great trails around now and every one has its distinct flavor and perks but can I say that CCT is just SO different. The choice of trail lines, elevation changes, tight twisty singletrack and all the dips and switchbacks make it quite unusual for our area. It seems so much of mtb has become a race to go far and fast - this is a throwback to the back and forth, up, down, over and around style. A few places to really fly but there’s Cedar Valley if you want big air and LNSP to set land speed records. CCT is a different type of trail offering a different vibe and I am so glad to see it added to our mix!

I rode 4 laps out there yesterday on my Single Speed. Current Loop is 2.6 miles. (they opened a new section). It is good loop. Rides more like a solid BLUE trail as far as terrain and fitness needs.  I had a good time and will definitely go back. THanks to all that involved with this!

Wow - single on that is great.  Agreed it is a sturdy blue - nothing tech, just sweet twisty singletrack!

+1 on SS out at CCT - can bust out from my house 10 minute spin up to Brown St entrance, bang out some laps and cruise back home - sick - the more I ride it the more I dig it...  I need to try descending on that initial climb up from Brown to 2nd, I bet that flows well.

Off of Cabarrus Avenue, park at end of 2nd Street in the gravel lot on left.

Imagine it would be killer riding in opposite direction too! Traffic flow is still low enough and sight lines are good.

Not yet. Its only kinda open. It drains really well and there isn't a lot to mess up out there as far as berms or anything goes. If you are familiar with rocky river it has similar properties so you could go by that trails open and close for some guidance.

I did a drive by of what I think is the trailhead today while out running some errands.

To be clear, the entrance is the small dirt lot directly across from someone’s house? I felt like I was trespassing. Are the few homeowners on 2nd Street cool with cars there, or am I in the wrong place?

To be clear, according to P&R, the trail is not officially open yet.

1) Those who are currently riding it are helping to bed in and prepare the trail for traffic.
2) There will eventually be a parking lot added at the trailhead.  There is currently nothing there except a bare patch of dirt to park on and an opening in the woods.
3) Please do not park on the paved road.
4) The folks who live in the two houses are elderly and have had that secluded little slice of Concord all to themselves for god knows how long.
5) Please be respectful if you test the trail out.
6) NO dropping shorts in front of their front porch/front door.  Be changed before you get there and find someplace else to change your clothes after.  The parking area is VERY close to the front of their homes.
7) Find a place to take a whizz BEFORE you get there, or wait and bury yourself deep in the woods halfway through the trail, if needed.

Those folks have been very patient and nice to us thus far, and they gave their blessing to the city, so respect that and be nice back to them as well.  If we act like a bunch of jerks, they could put up a fuss, and there aren't many other good options for parking out there.

Thanks. This speaks to the concerns/questions I had when I did a drive-by. I'm in Harrisburg, so not quite local, but pretty close. I'd love to give the trail a try since the only trail closer is Sherman.

That said, it almost feels like parking down the road in a public lot is a better idea so as not to intrude on those folks.

Well that IS where the parking lot will be cut in, which is already flagged and in process.  So go ahead and park there, give them a friendly wave when you go by, and when they have garden veggies for sale, grab some.

The trail is awesome. Accessible, fun, flowy while still technical. The neighbors have been nothing but nice each time I've gone. Looking forward to the next visit

Depends on your skill.  I know guys who do Rocky River on a gravel bike.  There's nothing technical that's mandatory.  Might slip out on some of the uphills with skinny tires, but that's about it.

Great job on the design and implementation.  The trail is about 2.6 miles total with the first 1.25 or so slightly rooty but rides easy and the climbs gently wind back up hill after some surprisingly fast downhill sections.  Then the trail surface becomes a little rockier and the cardio starts.  This is where it becomes a solid blue, so solid in fact that the square breaks dimensional barriers and becomes a cube.  The climbs are little steeper, longer and broken up with again some surprisingly fast downhill sections.  I'd like to be able to session this half.

I used to be addicted to the Hokey Pokey but then I turned myself around.

For those who frequent Concord and are keeping score, be aware that we implemented a pretty major reroute this weekend.  Take it easy on the first lap.  We've tried to make the new routing obvious but if you're used to bombing through certain areas and are on autopilot, you might not realize the change coming up.  The goal is to take the sting out of some of the climbs, and increase the flow a bit. This will be the last change to the trail, until the next one.

There are also 2 new big berms built.  Some areas are still soft, so wheels on the trail are welcome.

Hit it this morning before the heat and more rain came. The new changes are fabulous, it's so much better and will be appreciated by the newbies that will most likely frequent the trail. When it all gets packed in and hard it's gonna be a lot of fun. Kudos to you all!

There's a pretty good sized pine down about 2 miles in before that grunt climb out on the powerline ROW. Other than that, it's awesome. Can't wait for it all to get packed in and rolling fast.

Got a couple laps in last night and enjoyed the ride; has a Signal Hill vibe, but maybe that's just the toilet along the route.  Kudos to the builders and looking forward to it bedding in and I presume more looking at the available city-owned land on a map.  There's a sizable pine down that'll need a chainsaw to remove it.  The tree fell kinda lengthwise along/across the trail though - it's approached going uphill, so easy enough to spot before trouble, hop off and duck under.

If anyone knows the guys who have been building berms and features on the trail without coordinating with the TC, please tell them to get a hold of Kevin or PM me.

We appreciate the enthusiasm, but there are some issues with what's been done, both from a safety and practicality standpoint.  If we can channel that enthusiasm into the master plan, it will keep us from having to do double work.

The closest address I can come up with is 98 2nd Street Southwest, Concord, NC 28027.  If in doubt, it's at the dead end of the short 2nd street.  There is currently a sign for the upcoming parking lot at the trailhead on the left side.
