Taking other's kids on trails

I take my nephew to some of the local trails and have no problems with that. However, he wants to bring one of his friends along. I don't have a problem with that except I don't want to be liable if the kid gets hurt. I don't know this kid or his family. Has anyone else faced this issue? Any recommendations? I figure to protect myself I could get some liability waiver from one of these legal forms sites and have the parent sign it before I take them.

Kevin: Not knowing the kid or is family is problematic. I'd definitely want to meet with them and get an understanding about who, what, where and when before assuming responsibility for their child. I'm assuming he is a juvenile, and you as an adult have a liability risk that cannot be waived easily. Don't blame you for balking.
What action to take in case of an accident or other emergency would be one t I'd want to cross.

You didn't mention the ages.. But I wouldn't bring him.

Have his parents bring him and drop him off, with his own bike and equipment.

Then he's just another trail user.

If they're not willing to do that.. I would steer clear.

It’s a sad state of our country/world when you can’t just take someone for a bike ride for fear of liability should something happen. I would not take them either unless their parents dropped them off as  InTheBush stated. But i pine for the days of innocence when you could go out in the world and if something happened the kids parents would chalk it up as the risks of outdoor activity and move on vs hunting for someone to blame.

I'm glad that this is an environment where you feel free to fail.

Thanks for the advice. I'll talk with the parents to see if they're willing to drop the kid off. I'm guessing he's 14-16 years old. As far as I know they may not be willing to let him go at all.
