Raw land trail design and layout

My neighborhood in Waxhaw (Union County) has community owned property (40-50 acres) around it that has a network of deer and kid paths through a patchwork of not developable forest around creeks and flood plain.  Several of us ride it and feel it has a lot of potential to expand.

We could really use some experienced design input on how to approach designing lines/routes.  Anyone willing to provide tips, tricks, or even come out and walk around the properties with us?

For example, three of us jumped in and created a mile loop around a 17 acre hilly forest (blower, rake, pick up logs/sticks) and some of it is great, and other parts sorta suck which is somewhat demotivating to have to re-work stuff vs ride.

Thanks!

Start by reading this.  Once you learn how to build trail that controls water flow when it rains, you will find it turns out to be a fun trail to ride and you can spend more time riding it as apposed to working on it.
Cliff Notes,
Avoid trail that goes straight up or down slopes. Work on side slopes and work it up and down almost like you are surfing the side of a big wave. Avoid flood plains unless you plan to elevate the trail with a lot of dirt and stone or a boardwalk.

Thanks for the recommendation - I got the book on Amazon and read cover to cover.  Also been riding around Charlotte and see trails a lot better.

Let me know if you would like to ride the trails we have started.  They are behind Cuthbertson High School and Lawson neighborhood (east of Lowes).
