Help Wanted - Take a Kid Mtn Biking Day on 10/6
08/02/12 at 7:51pm
Print Post
We could use some volunteers to partner up with Trip For Kids and REI to help put on another "Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day" on Saturday October 6th at Beatty.

Our VP Chris Muddiman did a great job leading this for us last year, he's checking to make sure his work schedule is okay this year to help out, but we need as many Tarheel Trailblazers as we can get to help put on and support this cool event. Duties will mostly be leading or sweeping a kids rid or helping out with grilling and serving everyone food at the end.

Despite just being a good thing to do in general, Trips For Kids and REI have been great partners and supporters of the Tarheel Trailblazers, and we need to make sure we turn out in force to show our support in return. You know REI just gave us another $10,000 grant, but Trips For Kid's has also given us a $5,000 grant in the past.

Anyone can do this, and it's a lot of fun. Please post up or PM me if you can help out and we'll stay in touch as it gets closer to the date.

This was the first event I attended after joing the club several years ago. I enjoyed the experience so much I became a regular Trips for Kids volunteer and I really do get back much more than I put into it. These kids truly appreciate the time we get to spend with them. Most commonly you will hear: "that was so much fun", "I wish I could do this every day", and my personal favorite, "this was my best day ever!" I will be there on 10/6; hope you can make it as well!!

I'll put it on my calendar.  I can bring two kids as well.  I can probably convince my 6yo to sweep with me, although he likes to ride out front.  Maybe my wife will help out.  As a new guy, this info might be found someplace, but...  is there plans for a pump track or something out there?

I'll help.
Keep me in the loop please.

BTW, I was looking at the IMBA page on Facebook and apparently if we register the event with them we are eligible to get swag for the kids. Not sure if you were aware of it but I didn't see us on the map and figured I'd ask.

Thanks, Mike. I will be coordinating the event for the club this year and appreciate all the help we can get. Your link was helpful and we are in the process of registering the event with IMBA. Look for more details and volunteer opportunities to come.

Thanks for all the work you guys are doing @ FJB. The kids love the trail and it is only getting better. Hopefully we can include some of the new stuff into our ride. I would not recommend planning a trailwork day for 10/6...gonna be kinda busy with 70-80 kids and 40-50 adults (not to mention sheep dog ladies, et al)  Wink

I should b there. All the current work is off the existing trail. Fyi we are planning a root-ectomy for spring. Gonna let the freeze/thaw of winter take its toll first though.

Thanks everyone for volunteering to help, and to Dennis for volunteering to lead this. I think I'll still be able to volunteer also, but have some things going on where I can't check the website as much as I used to. Glad to see folks willing to help with this really fun day.

Somebody has to take care of the trails after we get old Cool

Dennis, can you get me a short write up on the event? Date, times, and a short description?

I'd like to send out a notice to the CYCL email newsletter subscribers fairly soon.

I don't have any flyers but you could direct your email list to our club home page or cut & paste the announcement that is posted there. Thanks for the help. It is important to ask all those attending to rsvp so we can have enough food.

I will be posting up a task specific list of volunteer opportunities within the next couple of days.

Thanks to all who have offered their time for the 10/6 Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day at Francis J. Beatty Park. I still need to fill the following slots: 2 people to transport, set up & man the Club membership tent; ride marshals for 2 beginner, 2 intermediate, & 1 advanced group; 2 people to help get kids bikes & helmets fitted.

Please remember to RSVP by Oct. 1 to [email protected] if you are planning to attend as REI needs a head count for food. Looking forward to a great day on the trail.

So how'd the event go? Big turnout? I'm sure whoever came had fun. Mudman says no one needed medical attention except a scratch for Lunchbox.

Thanks to all who shared a beautiful fall day at FJB park. We had almost 75 riders on the trail at one time and you could hear the kids laughing and screaming all over the park. I especially want to thank the Trailblazers who led rides, manned (& picked up) the club tent, and to our Bike Patrol guys. REI put out a great meal of burgers, dogs, fruit, etc. there was homemade ice cream, and Earth Fare brought healty goodies for all.

And last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank Trips for Kids Charlotte for creating an opportunity for our club to give back to the community in such a positive way. Already looking forward to next year.
