the perfect doomsday bike

lets say you had to own a bike whose sole purpose was to get you 150-200 miles in a doomsday scenario (cars dont work).  assuming you will be traveling with the last of your belongings in a heavy backpack, what would be the most comfortable thing to be on for this distance?

i would say something gravel racerish would get you there alittle more quickly, but a hardtail 29er would most likely be more comfortable, and possibly more relaible as in less flats along the way.

No bike at all...

stick to the back country travelling at night. Eat wild edibles and whatever you can scavange. go light, take the basics. water, warmth, food. shelters can be improvised. Find a machete or crossbow. team up with trustworthy folks. Theres strength in numbers. Remember that you have to destroy the brain or the zombie will keep attacking Grin

I agree with Banjo to some extent, but I'd like to have a bike.

Probably go with a Fargo

gravel racerish was my thoughts like a hybrid or cyclocross since i see most travel happening on roads but would like the versatiility of taking gravel road or dirt path if necessary

My Schwinn klunker fits this bill. (unless my BOL is on top of a mountain.......which it isn't)

Single speed coaster brake to eliminate as many possibilities of a mechanical
Relatively fast rolling tires for on road excursions while still capable off road
Steel frame so i can repair without needing specialty tools
Already has panniers

If you are into survivalism and good reads, the book Survivors is great and even includes a portion where the character is trying to get home to the US and bikes thru portions of Europe

No. Then you have a commodity others want. Specifically others that live in a town with a crazy leaders who keeps a zombie child locked in a cage. Get a female karate master with a katana sword too.

I still say no bike. On a bicycle your highly visible because you have to stick to the roads(assuming there isnt singletrack to your destination). Also that bike is a commodity others might want and are willing to harm you for it.

But if you gotta ride... I would get a rigid 29er with mech v-brakes or coaster brake or something else that is easy to repair and easy to ride long distances.

i would get moving before panic sets in and people turn to stealing everything from one another.  worst case i make it half way and then resort to foot travel

It is not so practical to buy two horses for cheap and lock them in storage until needed

You are correct, but we already bought the horses.  So we might as well keep feeding them till dooms day.
